Default Re: Does the internet= anti-socialism?

The internet is what you make of it, what you do on your computer has no correlation with your ability to socialize with peers unless you establish that on purpose. For instance, " I talk on the forums because they are better friends than in person", would be an example of being anti social.

Whereas saying
Quote:
You could come to the forum and make strangers laugh all day at their computers but we all know the next day you go to school to eat lunch at your own table.
is an example of being a slacker and procrastinator. :3 But yeah shayds, asking this question is kinda like asking, did it rain today because I did not put on my lucky socks? When i had my lucky socks on all of last week, it didn't rain. Now it rains the moment I change them. Same can go for this question, it all depends on the person and what they actually do in real life. :3

Some people, however, come here to become a different person and to be accepted. Which is sad, but the truth for some.
So you can be antisocial and go online for your socializing. Because, you can be a whole other person there.
Just depends on who you are talking about. Because not everyone on here comes here for that. But, I disagree on your opinion of that the person cannot be antisocial for they are socializing here. Doesn't really work that way. I think you take the meaning of the word to the extent of them being completely socially retarded. In most cases, they are just socially retarded in real life, but not on the internet.
Is talking and debating with another human being not a form of socializing?
Quote:
To "socialise" may also mean simply to associate or mingle with people socially.
By talking or debating to others you are in fact "mingling", like it or not.
Do you even understand the definition of antisocial?
Quote:
Anti-social behaviour (with or without hyphen) is behaviour that lacks consideration for others and that may cause damage to society, whether intentionally or through negligence, as opposed to pro-social behaviour, behaviour that helps or benefits society.
You consider yourself to be antisocial? Here have a list of some antisocial behaviors:
Spoiler:
Substance misuse such as glue sniffing
Drinking alcohol on the streets
Problems related to animals such as not properly restraining animals in public places
Begging
Prostitution related activity such as curb crawling and loitering
Abandoned vehicles that may or may not be stolen
Vehicle nuisance such as "cruises" revving car engines, racing, wheel spinning and horn sounding.
Noise coming from business or industry
Noise coming from alarms
Noise coming from pubs and clubs
Environmental damage such as graffiti and littering
Inappropriate use of fireworks
Inappropriate use of public space such as disputes among neighbours, rowdy or inconsiderate behaviour
General drunken behaviour (which is rowdy or inconsiderate)
Hoax calls to the emergency services
Pubs or clubs serving alcohol after hours
Malicious communication
Hate incidents where abuse involves race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, age or disability
Firearms incidents such as use of an imitation weapon

The only one who could be considered to be "antisocial" on this forum would be NBT.
All the others, including you, are just plain social.
Maybe a little AWKWARD and perhaps even a little INSECURE in real life, but not ANTISOCIAL.

Don't use a word to describe yourself when you don't fully comprehend it's meaning.

That would be assuming antisocial as having a "negative" connotation.

I still say it's social as long as you are interacting. Doesn't necessarily mean the type of socializing can't have a "negative" or unhealthy effect.

I don't talk to people much, aside from my mom, sister and her boyfriend. Yet, when I actually do socialize I make it fun for everyone else. I don't have many "friends" in general. I have a lot of acquaintances though. Mainly I don't see a reason to bother having a lot of friends and usually just see people more as acquaintances.

That was more for others and not so much you CrackFat. I pretty much agree with what you said. Combined with my last post, I'd say it'd be more on how much you socialize and your effects involving others. Not really just your effects on yourself. Being social can be negative though, in my opinion.

Like, when you allow people involved in your social life to dictate the way you live. For instance, doing things you normally wouldn't do (smoking, drinking, etc...) because someone tells you to.

There may just be passive people who just don't start conversations too, that would be cool if someone started one with them.

You see opinion is everything in this debate. I threw a bone out and the wild dogs went nuts with it. The truth is there are many forms of socialization. The internet is indeed one of them. You can NOT argue it is not. Since in some way, shape, or form you must interact with someone on the net there by socializing. But non the less is also good to go outside every once in a while people. xD

I know it is a form of socializing and I am not denying that.
I am simply saying that someone can be antisocial and "socialize" over the internet to strangers. Because, antisocial people can feel comfortable knowing it's a person they will never meet face to face. (I understand your reasoning for you opinion though (
@Crackfat: That other guy was right. You have this confused with antisocial personality disorder (which I know nothing about, So I won't continue on that.) We are just talking about the word antisocial.

Not necessarily.

An anti-social individual, by definition, is someone who willingly opposes the practice of socializing with others. It is not someone who cannot socialize easily, nor is it someone who just does not like talking to people in general. It is, again, by definition, someone who does not socialize with others under any circumstance to the point where they are even hostile about considering it.

People can be asocial or introverted and still socialize on the internet. An anti-social individual, on the other hand, would never.

The actual meaning of the word is what I oh-so-nicely put in a frilly-nilly quote.

You're allowed to consider yourself to be antisocial, however that doesn't mean you ARE.

Sorta. It depends on what definition of antisocial you mean

1. Contrary to the laws and customs of society; devoid of or antagonistic to sociable instincts or practices.
2. Not sociable; not wanting the company of others.

The first definition WOULD socialize...in order to harm people.

Lot of people saying it's not? I'm surprised. At least to a certain degree.

Ur Mom is definitely right in the sense that the internet can lead to anti-socialism, if it becomes an obsession. If someone likes to spend some of their time, or even a lot of their time on the internet, it doesn't automatically make them antisocial.

I think that it could go either way depending on the behaviors of those using it.

People can be asocial or introverted and still socialize on the internet. An anti-social individual, on the other hand, would never.

Contrary to the laws and customs of society; devoid of or antagonistic to sociable instincts or practices
- a dangerous, unprincipled, antisocial type of man

Not sociable; not wanting the company of others

I know someone already posted it, but it fits my arguement to do it again...
How about you read the definitions. Again, you guys are taking the hostile crazy guy as an example or something. I understand your arguement, but I think it can be disproved. Here is another definition:
1. unwilling or unable to associate in a normal or friendly way with other people.
I understand why you would think that this (offtopic, really.) is socializing. It is, I agree. But, to say that that person cannot possibly be antisocial and be a user of this forum, I disagree.
If you do not get what I'm saying then I guess we can only agree to disagree.

The actual meaning of the word is what I oh-so-nicely put in a frilly-nilly quote.

You're allowed to consider yourself to be antisocial, however that doesn't mean you ARE.
I was using me as an example, something I made up. My family jokes about me being antisocial. When I think about it, by definition, I actually AM. Oh look! I capitalized a word too!
Seriously, though. If I use that definition, I am antisocial. However, I don't go as far to say I have a disorder. There is people who alot worse, though.

it's both really if your on the internet you can social a lot but being controled and addicted to the internet can make you anti social in the real world. I myself have gone addicted too it. i also become anti social. however thanks to a few friends and getting my life back on track I no longer get online much anymore I become anti-social here in the forums, facebook, twitter etc. I come here now just to discuss on a naruto once a day a week I am usually here only 2 hours a week.

it's better off to be social in the real world than the internet you live a healthier lifestyle and you be happier.

but yes it is a fact that the internet can make you anti-social. since there new forms of bullying now cyberbullying, online dating etc.
