@ Sticky.........I guess we just have two different views of the situation. Every character has failed somewhere along the line. It doesn't mean they're a failure. I won't call Itachi a failure until the story pans out. It doesn't make sense to do that when his cause can still be met in a way that is largely due to his actions. It seems you would be more happy if the Naruto manga was a much duller story with no plot, no twists, no suspense, and no direction. I personally prefer that the manga stay readable.

I know y'all like to think Itachi is this super genius with this super awesome plan of awesomeness. But I'm afraid that's just not the case. Here's why.

Itachi's goals can be summed up to the following:

1. Protect Sasuke
2. Prevent The Fourth Great Ninja War
3. Defeat Madara
4. Protect Konoha

Let's look at the first goal:

1. Protect Sasuke

Itachi is said to want to protect Sasuke. But in what way? From physical
harm? Considering that Itachi himself has broken Sasuke's wrist, and
Tsukiyomi him twice and nearly killed him several times. I don't care what
Madara says about "If Itachi wanted to kill Sasuke then he would have."
Accidents still happen and you can't calculate everything. For instance
what if Sasuke didn't use Orochimaru's substitute jutsu in time and just
got burnt to a crisp by Amateraus? Good going there Itachi. You did a fine
job of protecting your little brother. Then of course there was Sasuke's
fights against Deidara and Orochimaru which he could have lost. There
are so many times that Sasuke could have been seriously injured or even
dead. Itachi cares about Sasuke? What a joke. Naruto is right. He's a much better brother than Itachi will ever be. But what did Itachi really want to
protect Sasuke from? The answer (according to Madara at least) is the truth. Itachi didn't want Sasuke to find about how Konoha ordered the
eradication of the entire Uchiha Clan because he knew Sasuke would then
want to get revenge against Konoha. Itachi tried to prepare for this by
having Sasuke auto-Amaterasu Madara but of course that failed.
Now Sasuke is Madara's pet and wanting to destroy Konoha. Talk about
fail.


2. Prevent the Fourth Great Ninja War

Itachi had to choose between killing the entire Uchiha Clan and joining the Uchiha coup d'etat and risking the entire village being destroying leading
to the Fourth Great Ninja War. Itachi killed the Uchiha Clan except for two people his little brother Sasuke Uchiha and Madara Uchiha. Of course Itachi
wasn't gonna be able to kill Madara so you can't exactly blame him for that
but by letting Sasuke live and still killing the clan Itachi was able to create the worst situation possible: The Uchiha Clan is all but eradicated. Sasuke is driven mad with revenge and has joined the Akatsuki, and the Fourth Great Ninja War happened anyways. How much more fail can you get?

3. Defeat Madara

Some might not think this is Itachi's goal but given he had Sasuke tried to Amaterasu him with that auto-Amaterasu thing-a-mah-jig it's pretty clear
it was. Well that failed. Of course Itachi expected this to fail and that's
why he gave some of his powers to Naruto. However I will later explain
the problem with this and why Itachi's plan isn't as intricate as some will like to believe.

4. Protect Konoha

Itachi killed the Uchiha clan (save for Madara and Sasuke) to prevent the village from an Uchiha coup d'etat which would have led to the Fourth Great Ninja War. As you can see, the Fourth Great Ninja War has already
happened so Itachi fails on that account. But Itachi also fails to protect the village. First, Pain destroyed Konoha. Sure it was rebuilt but the damage was done. Heck even Orochimaru did major damage to Konoha.
And now Sasuke has joined hands with Madara to do guess what?
Destroy Konoha. Not only that but Madara is pretty darn close to
completing his Moon Eye Plan. Itachi you my good sir are a failure.


Ok, ok. Now I know what you're all thinking...ARBY'S! Just kidding. You're actually thinking "But didn't Itachi prepare for this by giving his power to Naruto?" And that' true but there are problems that need to be address
before we call Itachi's plan "brilliant". First is the fact that Itachi practically told Itachi to kill Naruto and even asked Sasuke later why he did not have the MS. So even if Itachi didn't actually want Sasuke to kill Naruto there
was no way for Sasuke to know that. The only reason Sasuke didn't kill
Naruto is because he didn't want to stoop to be Itachi's puppet. But
do remember this is AFTER Sasuke chioried Naruto through the lung.
Had Sasuke listened to Itachi (which he more or less did) AND was
actually successful at killing Naruto then what happens to Itachi's big
back up plan of giving Naruto his powers to save Sasuke and beat Madara?
Also another problem with the giving power to Naruto back up plan is that
Naruto could have been killed by someone else before. But more importantly is the fact that Naruto could have died AFTER Itachi gave
away his powers. For instance Pain could have killed Naruto and Madara
could have captured Naruto by now...sure it wouldn't be easy but it's definitely possible. Also Sasuke could have killed Naruto too.

Itachi's "plan" just fails for too many reason.

Itachi fails.

Miserably.

This is the way I see it.

Itachi failed.

Naruto will redeem him.

Itachi failed because he lacked faith.

Naruto will succeed because his faith is plentiful.

Itachi thought he had to choose between the Uchiha and the Village.
He lacked the faith needed to save the both of them. He lacked the
faith to join the Uchiha. And he lacked the faith to completely wipe
out the clan. All he could do was kill the clan and put his faith into Sasuke.

Yet Sasuke has failed. (I hope I don't have to explain that one.)

Now Itachi who has already failed is putting his faith into Naruto and making a gamble. Naruto will redeem Itachi. But Itachi has already failed.

Naruto succeeds because when Itachi asked would he choose the village or Sasuke. Naruto said both. Itachi may have said that this was a pipe dream and it really is. But it's that kind of faith that Naruto has that
will save the ninja world.


Itachi in a way is somewhat like Nagato. Both of them failed because they lacked faith and they took what little faith they had and put their trust in Naruto.




And so you know. I actually like the story how it is. I like the fact that Itachi and Nagato have failed and have to put their trust in Naruto.

Ok, I like where you're going with this, but you really focus to much on what "could've" happened. Yes, Itachi "could've" killed Sasuke, yes, Sasuke "could've" killed Naruto. But did any of those things happen? No. You keep out the fact that Itachi is also very clever. He lived with Sasuke for about seven years. He knows the true Sasuke. By hurting Sasuke, he makes him stronger. Itachi had to make Sasuke feel pain so it would make him want to train even more. As Itachi has stated, his goal all along was for Sasuke to kill him and become known as "the hero who avenged the Uchiha clan." If Itachi were to just simply let him win, Sasuke would've suspected something. Itachi couldn't of stopped Madara, this was already known for sure. As you stated, he had a back up plan, Naruto. Now, considering Itachi was in The Akatsuki, he probably knew a little about Naruto. Plus keep in mind that Itachi met Naruto twice, and we all know it doesn't take long for you to learn who Naruto really is, on and off the battlefield. Also keep in mind, Itachi had no idea about Pain's invasion, for if he had, he probably would've tried to prevent it. Naruto was the perfect person for Itachi to give some of his power to. Why? Because Itachi knows that Naruto would stop at nothing to chase down Sasuke in case this incident happened. Itachi doesn't fail, but you did make some good points.
