Found the below quote with regards to Japanese mythology, and found it interesting in regards to relevance to the Naruto storyline.

The Kyuubi is a kitsune or fox. In myth the fox was said to change shape and have long life and use magic. The number of tails the kitsune possesses is said to tie into their length of life, with one tail said to be gained for every 100 years of life. Their powers will also grow as they age. At 1,000 years and nine-tails, the fox attains near-deity like powers.

Particularly interesting, was the part about the fox being a near-deity when having nine-tails.

This is just one of many. The manga is literally filled with inspiration from a lot of different mythology from a lot of different cultures and civilizations. One of these threads pop up now and then, but I don't think I've actually seen this one before. Good find.
