Default Privatized Rockets Debate.

Will they eventually reach the moon? And will they surpass NASA?

Yes, but more likely the well improve on getting satellites and people into orbits. Not to mention be a lot cheaper.

I'm all for it, and I think they can do it. There's good eatin' on some moon cheese...

But seriously, there will always be a place for NASA in space, even after full commercialization, just like there's a place for DARPA, even though private industry does most of military tech.

Yeah, though NASA seems to be at a stand still now.

It seems to me that the cost will eventually exceed the benefits for private firms. Not that I am against private enterprises entering the sector. But the US government is far more better at spending money needlessly. Certainly, governments can carry the burden of debts. Private commercialisation have limits. Such projects must be ready to take huge losses before they can begin to see benefits in return. But as far as I am concern commercial enterprises won't survive unless a continuously flow of funding is provided. But the real question is "who is going to carry the burden of the cost" to see through this project complete?

Although, continued private funding may be possible, but financial circumstances change. Until space travel becomes efficiently cheaper then market opportunities will provide resources. Otherwise, resources are simply wasted. And I believe right now the cost far exceeds the benefits even with a long-term plan.

NASA may be funded by the Government, but the gov. needs tax dollars in order to fund basic scientific research, and guess what? NO one wants to pay taxes, so no funding, no research.

We could Duplo our way to Mars. Then use K'Nex or the string pullies in LEGOs to winch up goods back and forth. Aside from meteoric impacts, I think we've got it sussed.

And meteoric impacts are moot because there's nothing we can do to stop them anyway.

Yah. How's that argument workin' out so far...? We are actually in the golden age of space exploration -- it just happens to be robotic. Thank God for the microchip.

LOL

There are ways to stop asteroid impacts if the object's trajectory is defined long enough in advance. I believe the going theory is a ten year lead time before current tech could do the job -- that's lead time after rendezvous.

NASA's budget is about to get lower, because shuttle launch costs are almost all of it. You can cut that and still spend money on space telescopes and interplanetary probes. In fact, I believe those two kinds of projects will proliferate with some nice speed now that the shuttle is moving out of the way. Why? Check this out:

World's Biggest Rocket

Go, SpaceX! That thing is awesome, and it's cheap. I can't wait...
