Spoiler: Tobirama Senju died fighting 20 Shinobi called Kinkaku force

Tobirama Senju, Hiruzen Sarutobi, Koharu, Homura, Danzo, Kagami and Torifu were on a mission. However they were ambushed by 20 Elite Kumogakure Shinobi (at least 20) called Kinkaku force.
Tobirama decided someone has to be sacrificed so others could escape. And he decided to sacrifice himself.

So, Tobirama Senju fought 20 Elite Shinobi from Kumogakure. Two of them probably were Kinkaku and Ginkaku!!!

Why die?

Wasn't it said the 2 left him on the verge of Death yet he was most definitely killed when ambushed by the Kinkaki Force?

I think it's two different occasions. When he was brought to the verge of death was when Kin and Gin ambushed Tobirama and the Raikage of that time. So When Tobirama actually died must've been his second run in with the brothers.
