Default Military history - The Carolean Army

This is a thread of another grand project I'm working on, to give brief but detailed information about military history - including empires, events, and battles. Reading through wikipedia may be boring, so read these shortened texts instead. I hope you will learn many new things, as I will rarely write about major occassions in history but smaller, less attentioned events.

Birth of the Caroleans:
Spoiler:

"Faderslandet at sina stupade soner."

The first time Sweden was recognized as a great power in 1611, the army consisted mostly of mercenaries that indeed utilized superior tactics, but was eventually outdated by the Redcoats of Britain, Drilled Soldiers of Prussia (Germany), and Fusiliers of France. To avoid being looked upon as a second-class military picture, the young Swedish king Karl XI begun a huge military reform that came to affect the future of Europe in many ways. From the king's latin name Charles came the word "Caroleans" (karoliner) to recognize his new elite soldiers. The Caroleans came to be crucial for the Swedish success against Denmark in the First Northern War.

Even the early, experimental Caroleans, could easily fend off a Danish army of three times their own size.

The reformation:
Spoiler:
Many things was changed with the Carolean Reformation, providing the Swedes with an army that despite the lack of manpower could fight equally against the British or French elites. Modern military historians suggest that it would cost 3 Redcoats to kill a single Carolean. Below are all areas of the reformation listed:
  • No militia or volunteers will be sent for offense, but used for garrison duties only.
  • An infantry divison will be standardized to 150 men each, including 12 grenadiers, 50 pikemen, and 88 musketeers.
  • All muskets will be equipped with bayonets.
  • Bayonet will be standardized to a 35cm stabbing blade.
  • Additional men will be drafted once per year from local towns.
  • Before being sent to the field, a Carolean must have at least 3 years of expert training.
  • Horses for military use must be specially chosen - short but strong.
To list the effects of these, are the following:
  • The use of elite soldiers only for offense, and militia for defense, gave a great advantage over the previously mixed armies used in most of Europe.
  • A standardized quantity allows the men to enter formation more easily, and hold the lines better.
  • Demand for bayonets on all firearms gives a clear advantage in melee combat over the less standardized foreign armies.
  • Bayonet standardization makes training melee combat easier.
  • The decided date for drafting gives population time to select the most fit men.
  • 3 years of training requirement makes sure that only elites remain on the battlefield.
  • Short horses allows the rider to come in better height for beheading an opponent using his saber.

Tactics and weapons:
Spoiler:

A basic Carolean infantryman had a variety of equipment depending on his role.

A musketeer was armed with a modern flintlock musket, which held a 35cm long socket bayonet for defensive purpose. A long sword was carried at the left side of the waist, allowing the sword to be pulled out from its sheath and cut the enemy in a single move. The uniform was made of thick materials that could resist bullets from far distance - the prelude of modern bullet-proof vests.

A pikeman worn a heavy breastplate that made him immune to shoulder-heighted musket volleys and he was only really vulnerable on his face or limbs. He was armed with a 6 meter long pike for excellent anti-cavalry defense, a bended cutting blade, and a pistol.

A grenadier worn the same bullet-proof uniform as the musketeers, but threw a hand grenade prior to firing their muskets. This resulted in massive devastation - both physically and mentally - among the enemy forces. They then charged in with bayonets immediately against the still shocked opponents, and could wipe out a much larger enemy squad.

A Swedish cavalryman was a very effective soldier compared to the melee-only horsemen used by the great powers of Britain and France. They were armed with no less than 3 firearms - two pistols and one carbine, along with a broadsword. Their tactic was to charge against the enemy while firing their heavy carbines, penetrating the armor of pikemen. They then used their pistols to return fire from enemy musketeers. After they had most likely gunned down half the enemy regiment, it was time to deliver the coup de grace with some help of cold steel. The short height of the Swedish horses made these men perfect for anti-infantry duty with swords, putting them in the right height to behead the enemy soldiers.

The basic firing drill for the Carolean army was the "volley to charge" system. This intended all soldiers to fire off their weapons in one, massive volley. They often stood in two lines (the first kneeling and the second standing), to countereffect the bad accuracy of a musket. Following this massive damage to both numbers and morale, the enemy would have to withstand an organized bayonet charge. The Caroleans would manage to hold their lines straight and run with bayonets forward into the enemy. This was much more effective than the more random charge of other bayonet-equipped European units.

Religion and idealism:
Spoiler:

The Caroleans were highly religious to a nearly fanatic level - they had no fear for death and was unbreakably loyal to the Swedish King. The tsar of Russia had claimed that the Swedish soldiers were not human in their skills of having no fear, maintaining regimental and individual discipline during the heat of battle, and fighting with superior skill. The Swedes also had strict rules that forbid looting, raping, killing of civilians, and other things that were considered a basic area of war in these days. The Caroleans were also not allowed to drink in times where there was a risk of enemy attacks, or during campaigns.

Caroleans in comparison to other armies:
Spoiler:

The Caroleans outmatched almost any other force and were at points considered the strongest army in the entire world.

France: Karl XII openly looked down upon French military power, giving the reasonable fact that the French - just as the British - only had fought natives during their great time. His words had facts, as the Caroleans were superior to the French in quality. Only thanks to Napoleon did the French gain Swedish respect.

Great Britain:The British soldiers conquered North America, Africa, and India. But they could not match the Swedes in terms of weapons quality or skill. One Carolean was worth 3 Readcoats on the open battlefield.

Prussia: Many say Prussia was the most powerful military nation in Europe of the 1700's. That may be true in the second half, but not during the time of the Caroleans. The Drilled Soldiers of Frederick the Great was merely a "little brother" in comparison to the Swedes.

Russia: A Russian army compared to an equally sized Swedish force is just a bad joke. There was no possibility for Russia to match Swedish weapons or discipline - not even in modern days.

USA: The Caroleans were made in the late 1600's, but the US army could not match them in any area until the early 19th century, when Sweden became a peaceful nation and USA remained on the path of destruction and chaos. Even today, USA cannot match Sweden in several military areas.

I would suggest you to look up The battle of Nordlingen in 1634 first. There the Swedes ended up in a crushing defeat. The battle of Poltava (Slaget ved Poltava) in 1709 was perhaps the battle that ended the empire of Karl XII altogether. So it's ironic to say that the Russian army was no match for their Swedish counterparts when they actually ended the Swedish empire. True, before the reform Peter the Great did in Russia, their army was weak, but after the reforms many historians agree that the armies were almost equally matched - if of equal size. Too bad the Russians had a HUGE advantage in numbers.

After the return of Karl XII to sweden in 1714, the Swedish empire failed miserably in every battle against Russia and couldn't match the power Russia had ever since.

My European military history of this time period is weak unless we are talking Anglo-Saxons and Normans. So thank you Aurega.

In fact Russian quality could not match the Swedish even after Poltava, they only won because of their numbers.

Sweden fell as a great empire in 1721, but not as a nation with a powerful army. That fact haven't changed for almost 400 years.

"great empire" and "nation with a powerful military" are words that are interchangeable. Think the British Empire, Nazi-Germany, USA, French Empire, Russia, Spanish empire and Portuguese empire. All of those nations had a strong military force that oversaw a very large empire.

And considering the fact that Sweden haven't won any major military engagements since the 1700s on their own, and have stayed completely pacifist during the last century, it suggests that Sweden can't have a powerful military force at all. Why were Sweden one of the first and most eager country that joined NATO?

Size isn't all that matters for an empire. Manpower doesn't make an army strong, quality weapons and training does. Also, it is almost impossible for a large nation to have as good quality as a small nation due to the higher upkeep costs.

And, that comment proves you lack any education in this matter at all. Sweden is definately not a member of NATO.

Exactly; Sweden is not a member of NATO.

What I do wonder is, how come that whenever I make a thread, people comes to argue and insult me rather than just read and then like it or leave?

And, that comment proves you lack any education in this matter at all. Sweden is definitely not a member of NATO.

You realize you could have just politely corrected him instead of insulting his intelligence. He was actually replying to you after all, unlike the rest of us. Why start a discussion if you don't want to discuss?? Oh, right, because you think you've posted irrefutable facts and just want your threads closed to discussion after post 1. Sadly, You haven't the power to exclude other posters, but worse: you possess more contrived statistics than anything qualifying as proof. Discussion wrecks your ideology.

Generally because most people disagree with your assumptions and statistics, and people love to argue facts over the internet.

I insult others? How do you think I feel when I put so much effort in a work that is obviously not good enough for anyone to even care about? It is in the laws of humanity to be polite, and respect the work of others. So I now, politely, ask everyone that visits my threads not to say anything mean and be nice.

If "people" likes to argue, then "people" are strange creatures indeed. Why can't everyone favor peace and happiness so that this world can someday be a good place?

You mean the dream of every good person. A dictator wishes for control, a good person wishes for peace, happiness, and equality. Though no present ideology can present all these options at once.
