How does one define music...

Music is the language of one's soul. A composer puts his soul into his music, which is played by musicians who feel the soul of the composer and puts their souls into the music as they play it. This is felt by the audience, who feel the collective souls of the musicians, the conductor, and the composer, and each person who feels the music takes something different from the experience, even though they all heard (or played or conducted) the same piece of music. This feeling crosses boundaries of distance, race, culture, hate, and anything else that might create rifts among people. In that sense, one might say that music's beauty is in the fact that it's universal, and yet also totally exclusive and personal.

Or via the manipulation of vocals, but yes that is essentially how I would define music.

It is one thing to sing/perform a song; it is something entirely different when you sing/perform that same song with passion.
