Default Church versus Contraception

So the State states that Contraception is a nice method for controlling the population of a certain country, while the Church states that it is illegal and it is a sin.

So is contraception really a nice idea ?

Debate.

Default Re: Church versus Contraception

No church can legitimately declare anything illegal, unless the church in question runs a theocracy. The Vatican falls under that definition, but only within Vatican City. Personally, I don't think any institution of faith should have any say in government matters. But even where faith is concerned, the Vatican's stance on contraception is strained, from a logical point of view. From their standpoint, it would seem a sin to bathe or wear shoes, since both interfere with the natural expression of the human body as a truth of creation. They claim that using the rhythm method of contraception is okay because it is making use of natural cycles within the body. The premise here is that the body is an expression of divine truth, and that sexual union between married couples increases intimacy and is an act of love. It is claimed that the use of condoms damages sex as an act of love; this is of course ludicrous. There is no evidence to suggest that sex without a condom promotes love where none exists, therefore it does not automatically follow that unprotected sex in a loving relationship promotes increased lovingness. In fact, in a relationship where you are trying not to have children, merely employing an unreliable method or abstinence may actually harm the relationship, despite the Church's call for communication and discipline in a marriage. It could cause anxiety (because the method is unreliable) or it could cause one or both partners to be tempted to "immoral" sexual acts, as their desires cannot be fulfilled within the context of marriage. And as many of us know, in Christianity tempting another to sin is it's own sin.

EDIT: You should also remember that this advice is coming from people who not only don't have moral sexual relationships when they have any sexual relationships, but don't have experience with marriage in the first place (with extremely rare exception). Just who is informing them that sex without contraception is more loving?

Debate.
I think it's more accurate to say the Church is for abstinence and
sex after marriage. It sees sex as being for the purpose of reproduction
rather than for the purpose of recreation.

Hasn't the vatican come out to endorse condoms in some cases? not sure what, but probably still ridiculous.

Not the case, unfortunately: The Catholic Church and contraception

They would disagree with your use of the word "endorse." I think they would say "grudging acceptance of a lesser evil in certain limited circumstances."

They singled out gay prostitution for their limited example of condom use in the context of preventing the greater evil of spreading disease. Obviously an enlightened bunch...
