The idea behind the romantic subplot defintely is one of my favorite aspect of the story, and not because of the pairings (per say) but because of the connection it creates to the readers/viewers. I mean not many people can relate to being a ninja directly right (i think), but we can all relate to relationships and how those play out, making these characters feel more human.

I think it is important we understand that none of this will resolve any time soon, and while we do read into the story for hints here and there (because I am sure they are everywhere and at the end, everyone will be like.."oh ya, i remember that") but remember the maturation of Naruto and his own realizations. As time goes foward he begins to understand his own fortune and what it means to have friends and people who care about him. By comparing himself to Garaa we can say that he really get's the true value of what he has in the case of friends, we could then argue that the value of those people is so high, it may be very difficult to pull out what exactly is romantic and what is not.

Relationships, Bonds, what ever you want to call them, I feel they are all important to Naruto because of the amount of work he had to go through to achieve them and the amount of scrutiny and hostility he had to push through in order to get recognition and even some sort of confirmation for self worth.

Conceivably we understand that Naruto has probably only began to understand the value of people that actually ackowledge and care for him for about five years, and to then consider that he may have real romantic feelings (aside from the childish ones prior to understanding bonds) is hard to say, it's much more complex in it's nature and probably won't be explored until much later in the series.

The basics are, we have two confessions, we can argue that Kishi just wants to keep us on the edge of our seats, but we can also argue that as a character perhaps Naruto doesn't know what to do next. That type of caring is so foreign to him that perhaps all of this is still somthing he has to consider because of the amount of value that would bring to him. In some ways he and Sai are very similar in the ways of coming to grips with any type of relationships.

You are way over thinking this Silent Blade, although I like the effort. The fact is Kishi is not writing a love story and his chapters are far too short to really develop a sub plot. If I know Kishi by now, he's going to pair up Hinata with Naruto based on nothing or go all out and make Sakura his girl because there is a developed mutual attraction.

That said, it's going to end up like Asuma and Kurenai, just sorta randomly happening.

Perhaps you are right, though Kishi likes to mess with us, dropping things here and there. He develops things in chapters long past, and then they resurface later. I do agree though, this is a fighting Manga, and the romance will end up a subplot.

My own experience with this type of story and the romantic subplot is that it doesn't get revisited until the primary fight is resolved (or about to start). I suppose what made me think that way was the consideration given in the chapters dealing with rescuing Garaa and Naruto comparing all the friends he had made since he finally started working hard to become a ninja vs. the 0 that Garaa had. I may look way to deep into things, but it's always fun to analyze characters and point out the possibility :-P

edit: and ya! I don't really know where Asuma&Kureni happened, but considering they are secondary characters I mean all sorts of things happen when you're not looking right! still sort of random in a sense.

Secondary doesn't matter at this point, he randomly drops tidbits here and there. As you said, Naruto will oursue them on the eve of the climatic battle and confide with both of them. It may end up with him shooting them both down or reciprocating the feelings of Sakura or Hinata. As I said, it will happen randomly because someone relationships in real life doesn't take years to develop into marriage. Naruto may have an epiphany where he finds himself enamored with Hinata or he might finally confront Sakura and find out if her confession was real.

Thus it comes down to his secret admirer or his long standing crush.

Agreed, it could just be completely random, and you are right of course that some relationships just happen that way. I mean heck that is just the way things go, and war and the possibility of death tend to accelerate these things much faster than normal.

On a side note: I think Bacon is following me! now I just need to find a way to get some eggs and orange juice to follow me too :-P

And Kishi will just make us guess from there

If I were him if I did that, I would just joke at the end and say she just simply gained a LOT of weight... ALLOT of weight...

And to be honest, her personality kinda kills anything that people would like about her. Hinata is a man's dream.

You know it occurs to me that Kishi and the animators do a wobbly job on Sakura. Take the end of the Pain arc: when she called out for Naruto to hurry back, she looked terrible. But when Naruto caused that mini nuclear explosion inside Kanoha, they flipped back to Sakura's surprised face and she looked pretty attractive there. But I'll say that almost all the other ladies look better in Naruto.

I know this is unrelated and isn't meant to offend anyone, but I have to laugh at some point in the anime when Sai is trying to find out a better way to relate to people, and finds that nicknames based on physical characteristics are a good way to form a bond. So, when he looks at Sakura and comes up with "ugly" (I am not saying she is, just that this thread made me think of that, he comes up with the same for Ino, but says the opposite so he doesn't get beat on). I just wonder what his preception of pretty is, being an artist and all.
