How much power were you really going to gain if you won? I say give him his fleeting glory. You'll have plenty of opportunity to get involved in pointless status games when you are rich and can pay for power, while your opponent is still flipping burgers.

Kind of.
Most of the time, people do things to: A) Gain popularity or more than what they have B) Actually succeed in life In your case, the more popular person is against you, and more people will vote for that person, even if he doesn't do shut in school. They only vote based on how cool a person is nowadays, and the one with more academic achievements doesn't win because that person's a "nerd", and nobody wants to get caught voting for a nerd, which is really ignorant. :/ So yes, there are some places in life where popularity is the only thing that's important.

Addressing your situation: Let him get on his high horse and flaunt him being on the Student Council, because in the end, when you're making billions of dollars, all he will have is his ego in say 10th grade.
Addressing the popularity contest: Yes, when you're a teenager life is a popularity contest. I won't object to that. The popular kids are always the ones to win things voted by students because...well - they're popular. Although this may be true in your teen years, when you grow up, popularity doesn't mean crap. The most intelligent and the most hard working person will always win. So, in answer to your question - No, life is not a popularity contest. Yes, your teen years are a popularity contest.

Popularity in conjunction with voting is apparent. Not with life in general.

That's a general assumption in which I do not concur to. Do you even know what you just said? You said that voting is in conjunction with popularity - meaning that people are voted on things because they are popular. Intelligence begs to differ.

Well, being popular is always going to help, whether or not it is the deciding factor. I cite the 2004 presidential election. Because I'm sure that was a vote for intelligence. /sarcasm/

Clearly it's going to help, but the most intelligent person always comes out on top one way or the other. I couldn't help but lol at that. Anyway, even if Bush won, he's still an idiot, therefore even if Kerry didn't win, he still won because he's by far more intelligent.

How do kids even get popular anyways? When i was in Kindergarten that kid was popular and yet I have no idea what he did or good thing he had done. Did he just get popular for no reason?

It's a status game, via the snowball effect. A guy throws a baseball real well, runs faster, or makes people laugh, and the next guy who is also good at one or all of those things becomes his friend. Next thing you know, these two have formed a clique of capability. They are capable and exclusive, making them higher status than others, which makes their favor desired by less capable people who are attracted to the cult of personality. Like a black hole, others are sucked into their orbit and the cult feeds on itself. The thing to understand about this is that status is a relative factor: even a penniless bag lady can become queen, if only others will bow to her! When people see others differ to a person, that person's status increases. You don't need to have done anything particularly clever or important. Exclusivity feeds this. If membership in your clique is seen as favorable by those outside of it, but it is hard to get membership, then your status increases again. This happens because others see a chance to gain resources: influence, inclusion, access, even money. All of this can be built on thin air. It only requires the golden elixir of belief.

if life was a popularity contest then Justin Bieber would be world dictator.
Scary thought.
