I don't think some highschool course should be mandatory because some people have made up their decisions in what their career may be. Although, some people might have not made up their decisions in what career they want to do. Even so, I don't think it's necessary to most student since not all courses will be needed in their career. For example a banker or accountant who has taken math in highschool would not necessary need algebra, graphing, and etc. Since it wont be often be used or possibly never. Also it's not like anyone needs a scientific calculator to solve or a scientific calculator in their mind to solve their own problems for those two jobs listed. Everyone often only need a regular calulator when they are working.
Also in science, it's a difficult course that require a lot of effort of study to be a scientist or doctor. So what are the chances of many students being able to become an doctor or scientist. Furthermore, what is the benefit of learning something that won't be necessary to most children that don't want to be a doctor or scientist. I think highschool should have a choice to choose what courses people want to take for their desired career. If they have not decide what career they want to do in the future. Then the counsellor will tell them what is best to do until they have decide to do what they desire. Although, some student may change there career. Therefore, it is never to late to chance the courses that they were learning to be the first career they choice. It's basically like having to change job it's never to late to get a new job and have to learn some new skills for that job. Beside people can do that as part time. So in school it can be similar because they can study the first career they choice as well as study their second career. So what do you think, should some highschool course be mandatory or not? Put simply, no they should not. By the time you reach high school you should already know enough to get through everyday life, anything further should be learned for a career. Being forced to learn things you do not need to survive in the everyday world, that you also won't use in your career, is a waste of the students time and energy.
Too much stock is placed in making everyones education 'rounded' instead of focusing and allowing their natural talents to flourish to it's full potential. This is why many parents pull their children out of school when they have a natural gift for playing instruments, so they can focus completely on perfecting their ability to play it. Although I agree the basic education is still needed, after that point however it should be up to the student. Oh and PE needs to screw off, you're at school to learn not exercise. |
