I disagree. Location and signatures weren't originally created for this purpose. That's why people wouldn't think to look there. This notes box is created for the idea that people are to use it for the reason I explained in the OP. People would think to look there :o Like you said, it's only a 2 minute thing.

This will be useful as to know whether you can expect a certain person to answer a PM you send them, befriend them or anything else which needs the attention of the other side. Some people on this forum are inactive...well, a lot of them are actually. If they hide their last activity, you can't know that they're inactive, unless you look at their posts' date, but I doubt many people would do this. This would just notify the people.

It's not only to be used in such cases though. Just by being away, as OP stated too.

Spamming in that box such as "lol wut" could be evaded by making pre-set options like SRhyse said. Like chosing from "Active", "Permanently Inactive" or "Away". Maybe the second option is useless though, as I don't think anyone would bother setting it if they're leaving the forum but it's variety.

So personally, I approve of this.

I'm not sure how you think this would look if I implemented it, but it'd be text under a user's username above their avatar and under their title next to their post. Where location is. A pixel or two above, or below. But right there.

So, if people wouldn't think to look there, then they're not going to see the new status anyway. If they did think to look there, then they'd see it along with location, and thus see if someone used location for that.

We could let people type in ALL CAPS in their location for that purpose only if you'd like, on a temporary basis if they really were coming back.

There's also the issue of people actually using this well if it existed. Most people that leave just flake and leave. The ones that put any thought into it tend to put the info all over the place to anyone it concerns. Then on top of all that, for both, they have a tendency to extend or cut short their time away at complete random in face of everything that they've written, and tend not to bother notifying anyone about it anyway.

The more this gets talked about the less I think anyone but you would use it productively, and that you can use the methods outlined to do it just as well, if not better .

How would you guys feel about having something automatically put there, like the last time a user logged in? Or how active they tend to be? Seems like that'd be a better indicator, and about as accurate as you could get, since most people don't have any idea if they're coming or going from the site, despite their best intentions. That information's already in anyone's profile, but it is an option I might be able to pull.

But again, that's something anyone that actually had any concern with whether or not a member would be likely to respond to them ever, if at all, or are currently waiting for a response, would likely do anyway- they'd just go check their profile.

I see. I was actually thinking of a little box in the users profile page to make it more private, so that anyone who did care enough, would look at the uers profile. And not just any old person could see their info. But, I guess your method is alright.

Yes but, as I said before. This is not just limited to location. This has other uses too. Also, If I put ' Location: On holiday' it wouldn't actually give anyone an idea of where you actually live. Though, granted that a lot people, myself included just put random shiz on their location. Still, if this is a 2 minute thing. I don't see the problem. Its more beneficial to everyone if this little notes box was included too :o

Lol Again, this is not just for people going on holiday/leaving the forums. It can be for anything. I guess it is kind of a status in a sense that you can put anything you want up there. Except that it will obviously be filtered. Also, if people knew about this feature[assuming it was to be made] they probably would use it. Just they would use any other feature brought into the forums. Everyone uses the strikethrough option now

Lol Why? And using the location and signature, just isn't the same. People like to use their signatures for things that don't concern stuff like holidays, WS updates, leaving the forums for a while, family crisises etc. They almost always make threads. Which I explained in the OP. Not everyone sees. Locations can work, but that means you have to cut off your location. And write something else instead. While you could have your location+your status. And your status isnt going to always be about location.

In bold. Theres no point in doing that, as if you cared enough you could just go to their profile. Besides, I think a notes box, is much better than something which tells you when the user was last online . For reasons Ive already explained. That's really not what Im wishing you to do at all.
