On Chatroom Threads and Eggs

Firstly - Happy Easter! May your ninja skills aid you in your scavenging endeavors. And since you represent all of us here on the forum, be sure not to loose

Secondly - There's been alot of talk as to how we'd like to handle privater, 'chat roomy' kinds of topics on the forum itself.

After talking with alot of members and getting your consensus on it-

You're always required to be social and fun within the very few rules we keep on the site, but you're also encouraged to make use of our Private Messaging feature for conversations that are just that

.

Even if it's something silly like pitting Newtons, Nachos and Dolphins against one another, try to make threads alot of people can get in on and enjoy.

*Again, I'm not putting down the Nacho-Dolphin-Newton topic, and the official word at Viz is still Newton's FTW*

So, New Rule of Thumb-

If the thread you want to make is basically an IM exchange in public, use PM instead.

No one's in trouble or anything; this isn't that kind of site. We're actually glad you guys brought it up, as it's something that's a little too weird for us to have thought about on our own.

And as a final note, we wish any love that blossoms on the forum the best of luck.

PS

*IM = Instant Message, a la Aol Instant Messenger (AIM), Trillian, etc. Those little chat-box programs that let you send and receive messages that go 'ding!'

Anyway... I do actually have a point here. I'm unfamiliar with the acronym IM and was hoping you could tell me what that is and why it's not a good idea for a thread.

As to what IM means, I updated my first post explaining what an Instant Message is.

For some reasons why it's less of a good idea to make a topic that plays out that way, I'll list some snippets that were common in the complaints I got about it-

-The point of a forum is suppose to be that alot of people can talk together, rather than just a select few. Private chat topics are alienating for alot of people.

-The ranking system you guys are helping us make. Since alot of it is based on the number of posts you make, the only reasonable way for someone to get a higher rank would quickly become making a 'random-chat' topic and spamming their posts to get ahead. It'd defeat the fun of the ranking system, which the majority of users are adamantly behind.

-Since the forum's growing so much in popularity and there will likely be alot of users in the future if all goes well, topics like that might become the norm. Pretty soon, anyone clicking on the 'View New Posts' button would be out of luck in finding something they could enjoy and get in on.

Again, this isn't us taking an official stance on being chatty and friendly; quite the opposite. We're encouraging you guys to keep things social, saving the more private conversations for Private Messaging.
