Default The (Unofficial) Team Fortress 2 Thread

THE UNOFFICIAL TEAM FORTRESS 2 THREAD

In the middle of nowhere, two rival construction companies fight; the teams are named Builders League United (BLU) and Real Excavation and Demolition (RED). Of course, both companies are secretly opposing intelligence agencies. The two agencies hire nine different mercenaries, each crazier and eviler than the last. With the invention of the revolutionary respawn machine, RED was certain it would not lose; unfortunately, BLU invented the respawn machine only 7 minutes later.

Now both teams are locked in eternal combat. Choose your class and get ready to FIGHT!

Index
-What is Team Fortress 2?
Spoiler:
Team Fortress 2 is only the best First Person Shooter ever. Successor to the original Team Fortress which revolutionized class-based first-person-shooters, Team Fortress 2 is unique in that each class is extremely different from the other, and each is effective in its own way. The swift Scout is useful for securing points and blasting individual fighters at close range, the murderous Medic can heal his teammates and move around quickly after them (As well as unleash the dreaded "uubercharge"), the dreaded Demoman is a jack of all trades with amazing ability to set traps and rain grenade death, the hardy Heavy can tank damage and dish it back a thousand fold, and the sinister Spy can disguise himself as the enemy! There are nine different classes, so there is plenty of space to find your own playstyle.

The critically-acclaimed graphical style of the game resembles a sort of Pixar-gone-wrong aesthetic, lending itself to the hilarity that ensues. The design team has put hundreds (Maybe even thousands) of jokes into the game, from the character specific taunts (Some of which can be quite deadly) to the level-specific features such as a fearsome train that can crush combatants on the level Well. The game regularly updates, with features such as new class-specific weapons, new levels, and new gameplay modes being added every year. Even funny hats that you can pick off the ground add to the fun!

Beyond that, TF2 is a fairly deep FPS. It features several modes such as Capture the Flag, Arena (Deathmatch), and King of the Hill, but the main two are Capture Point, a style that relies upon getting territory, and Payload, a style that involves sending a nuke to the opponent's base with their name written on it. Although several characters do have a fairly low learning curve (Such as the Pyro and Engie), others can become incredibly deadly in the hands of an expert with care (Such as the Demoman, Sniper, and Scout).

So, I heavily recommend you play TF2.

-How can I play TF2?
Spoiler:
Team Fortress 2 is available for the PC, Xbox 360, and PS3 in various forms. However, the PS3 version sucks and shall not be discussed further. The 360 version, released in the game compilation The Orange Box, is competent but lacks any of the updates. Therefore, there is a definitive version: The PC version.

Released as part of the Orange Box and also sold by itself on Valve's shop online, Team Fortress 2 for the PC is the best version. The game was released in 2007, so make sure your PC is up to snuff. Valve's online store often has sales of the game, so if you want to get it for cheaper, look on weekends.

To Orange Box or not to Orange Box? The Orange Box is more expensive than getting TF2 alone, but it makes up for that by including Half Life 2, the two Half Life 2 episodes, and Portal, an extremely well-scripted first-person-puzzle game. The choice is up to the buyer; all of the games included are single player, so a person who prefers online play should probably just get the cheaper version, while those who like to play both alone and with friends should probably get the Orange Box.

-Classes?
Spoiler:
There are nine classes in the game. their profiles are seen here.

The Scout
Spoiler:

"Grass grows, birds fly, sun shines, and brotha'- I hurt people."

Fast. Deadly. As durable as a wet paper bag. These traits define Team Fortress 2's glass cannon and fragile speedster, the Scout. A frikken blur from Brooklyn, he got into the mercenary business due to the fights he had with his brothers and sisters; the fights were often over fast, so he had to run like hell to reach them. Fast, obnoxious, and rude, the Scout will either make you laugh or make you RAGE at your monitor.

The Scout, like most classes, has three weapons; a main weapon, a secondary, and a melee. The main weapon of the Scout is the Scattergun, a sawed off shotgun which is useless at far ranges and deadly up close for meatshots. His pistol is the opposite; weak as hell, but good at medium to far ranges. His melee weapon, the baseball bat, is useful for humiliating opponents and little else.

To see more of the Scout's character, here's the video Meet the Scout.

The Soldier
Spoiler:

"If fighting is sure to result in victory, then you must fight!"
"He used his fight money to buy two of every animal on Earth. Then he loaded them onto a boat, and beat the crap out of every single one of them!"

In TF2, there are specialists. There are namby pamby Medic, Engineers who refuse to get their hands and MIT scholarships dirty, and cowards who either hide behind masks or stay behind the front lines to shoot the opponents in the face without looking into the whites of their eyes. Then there is the Soldier. Enraged by the fact he could not fight in World War II, the Soldier went on a Nazi killing spree in Poland, stopping in 1949 after hearing that the war was over.

The Soldier uses a large, shoulder mounted rocket launcher as his main weapon to get the job done. Powerful and with plenty of splash damage, the rocket launcher also gives the Soldier the ability to soar to new heights and rain death while screaming like an eagle using "rocket jumps". His secondary, the shotgun, is a standard sidearm and one that quite benefits him; he often runs out of rockets in a clip, and reloading the rocket launcher is slow. The shotgun can be popped out at these times for accurate death. Finally, the Soldier wields the incredibly deadly Entrenchment Device, also known as the Shovel. The Shovel is best used for whacking unsuspecting Snipers and humiliation purposes.

For more information on the Soldier's character, watch "Meet the Soldier."

Also, just wanted to say that the Soldier is my favorite class.

Pyro
Spoiler:

"Huddah huddah huh mrrrff!"

The Pyro is a mysterious fellow? Is he a he, or is she a she, or is it neither? Where did the creature's love of flames come from? We shall never know, unfortunately, due to the Pyro's abestos lined lungs and habit of wearing a gas mask all the time. Whatever happens, the Pyro is certainly one crazy frankenstein's monster of a character.

The Pyro's main weapon is, of course, the flamethrower. The flamethrower is unusual for a TF2 weapon because it lights people ON FIRE! Of course, while people are ON FIRE!, they take around 55 damage until they find a health pack, Medic, or a handy body of water. However, because of the flamethrower's potential to make tons of people ON FIRE!, it has the shortest range of any non-melee weapon in the game. The Pyro's secondary makes up for this; the shotgun is useful at medium range where you can't touch opponents with fire. Finally, the fireax allows the Pyro to take on members of its own kind (Who do NOT burn) and people underwater with greater ease.

There is currently no Meet the Pyro video. Let us hope it comes soon.

More shall be updated!

You may discuss anything you want about Team Fortress 2 in this thread!

Are you disputing Team Fortress 2 is the best FPS ever in MY TF2 thread?

Actually, I personally give Half Life 2 that role, with Goldeneye 64 also coming close. However, Team Fortress 2 is still more awesome than you.
