Do you mean is it okay for a CEO not wishing to be badgered by emails?

It's his work email address, not his private email address. I consider there to be a difference.

if a person using AT&T dosen't like something about his phone so he emails the CEO about it being an ass while doing it then he should be asked to stop but if he continues then yes, because the person should have just chosen another service provider. I don't entirely get what happened.
Why did he email the CEO? It seems like someone lower on the food chain could have been helpful. But like I said, I don't totally get it and I don't even know what Giorgio was requesting. I don't think that the way Stephenson reacted was ok. The "AT&T Executive Response Team", aka Stephenson's Goons, gave Giorgio the screw off message after he said that he was switching companies. Which means that anytime someone expresses dissatisfaction and threatens to switch companies...it's AT&T's policy to tell the dissatisfied customer to go away. So not only are they rude, they're screwing themselves. Fail.

Logically this makes prefect sense. Companies have emails set up for contacting them. Whether it's a business email or home email doesn't really matter. If customers were to send massive amounts of messages to his email address, it would become useless.
Now the publicity for this isn't good. A better way to solve this is the CEO email address that the customer can contact. It may not actually be read by the CEO, but it could be from time to time.

But it's like the time I emailed a bunch of Senators, if customers get automatic responses, they will just be annoyed and really, the whole system is pointless. If the CEO has someone beneath him or her respond, that just looks bad. And if that's an automatic response too...let's just say that the Senator better be getting a job in whatever spare time he or she has while not answering emails, because they don't have my vote ever again.

However, I think there is a difference between a Senator and a CEO. Senator is elected to represent his/her constituency. Not responding is somewhat bad form. However, the reality is that a staffer will read it and the response will be reported to the Senator. There are just too many emails. If actually want a real response, I'd suggest a phone call or a real letter. Now a CEO is chosen by the board to run the company. He/She really doesn't have any responsibility to the customers. Now perhaps the share holders for a publicly traded company should be able to contact him/her. So I think a response of any kind may at least look better. Although, a staffer would be better than an automatic response. Having the actual CEO respond from time to time would be good too.

A couple of them gave me real responses, which impressed me. Most of them had form responses. It also may be that they saw my age, and thought "Nope, not a voter. Ignore!" xD This is true...and I wonder how many emails a CEO actually gets each day. The CEO still gets paid and doesn't have to worry about being re-elected. AT&T is a large company. Losing a customer here and a customer there won't really hurt. Besides that, they have to know that all the people who threaten to switch don't actually switch.

Well yes. A CEO's job really isn't customer interaction. A CEO does have to keep the board happy, which in term need to be voted in by the shareholders. So he/she is "elected" in an indirect manner. Of course, none of this involves the customer. However, you wouldn't want your CEO peeving off your customers.

I was obviously not clear in what I meant, not in explaining the relevant details. Consider this thread a failure and disregard.
Edit: For the record the followup article http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/03/a...he-ceo-this-i/
