Isshin Kurosaki.

Just who the frick is this guy? He shows up and one shots the arrancar form of Grand Fisher as a Soul Reaper, and never does anything important again. Major WTH moment. I don't think that he has any major connections to Aizen. In fact, he only left the Soul Society 20 years ago (or at least he wasn't a Soul Reaper for 20 years). I wouldn't be surprised if he wasn't a captain for some reason. Ichigo noticed his Spiritual Pressure and stated it was very powerful, despite not knowing it was his own fathers. Shinji didn't know who it was, so he must've become a Soul Reaper long after the Visored incident. Isshin talked about captains keeping their soul cutters at a manageable size, and I assume he knows this because he may have once been one. One thing that I'm confused about is, if Isshin wasn't a Soul Reaper before the Visored incident, how did he know so much about the Arrancars, the Visoreds, the Hogyoku, and Sosuke Aizen? He talked about them very casually with Kisuke during his brief appearance as a Soul Reaper. Did Kisuke just tell him all about it? Then you have to wonder why he left the Soul Society. I don't think anyone ever talked about some big event happening 20 years ago that made Isshin leave. The Visored incident seems much more well-known among the Soul Society, as it caused Seven captains to leave. However, if Isshin left on his own, it's likely fewer people know about that or were even involved. I wonder if it involves the Zero company. IIRC, the newest arc is supposed to be about him, so with this fight against Aizen it should be a good enough time to start talking about it.

Based on his Attire I would say he was once a Captain. Logically it was sometime after the Vizord were created by Aizen. It might be possible that Hisugaya is the one who took over his post (just a theory). Also it seems that his powers were taken away from him for some reason. I am thinking it might have been some sort of experiment that Kisuke was doing. They obviouslly know each other and he probably got all of his information on the Arrancar form Kisuke himself.

My personal guess: he's either the former captain of squad 0 or 14. I can't decide which number I like better. Basically he was likely a "secret" captain that only a few of the others were allowed to know about. Genrui obviously knew about him, and Kisuke likely just found out because he's a genius.

Well, from speculation with his shredded Captains' haori which looks suspiciously similar to Kenpachi's own haori, Isshin could be a past 11th Captain.

Kenpachi killed the past 11th captain. And that doesn't really explain the huge time line gap.

I was talking about the 11th Captain before the one that Kenpachi killed. It would make sense. Since Shinji didn't recognize it, it had to be before him. Isshin was likely a member of the Gotei 13 about a century and a half to two centuries ago. It would make sense, seeing as how both Aizen and Uruhara would have both likely been in the Gotei that time as well. After all, Aizen and Uruhara were shown as a 3rd Seat and a Vice at the beginning of the Turn Back the Pendulum Arc. It's not like they joined Gotei and suddenly were promoted to Vice Captain rank. It's likely that those three had met sometime in their career as a Soul Reaper.

The only thing blocking my speculation is Shinji not recognizing Isshin's reiatsu, but it could be due to not having seen nor sense his reiatsu in a while and then forgot about him.

There isn't a Squad 14. Only a Squad 0. And also, who's Genrui?

If Shinji didn't recognize it, it had to have been after he left, not before. If it was before he left, Shinji could've recognized it. Besides, Isshin was a Soul Reaper 20 years ago. Shinji was one 100 years ago. Isshin would've been a Soul Reaper after the Visored incident, explaining why Shinji didn't recognize it. There's no way Shinji would've just forgotten. Isshin wouldn't have met Urahara until he left the Soul Society. Actually, I think that he might've left the Soul Society because of something big. Not being accused of being a criminal or something, that's Kisuke's thing. No, it doesn't seem like he'd wanna be found. The visoreds also didn't want to be found, but they put that aside because they just hate Aizen that much. Isshin, whether or not he hated Aizen, didn't offer any assistance to any Soul Reaper since the Hitsugaya advance team arrived. Not even when four Espada level arrancar came and attacked. Even Urahara went for that, and he's also someone who was at odds with the Soul Society. I strongly believe he's from the 0 Company, because if it wasn't that big a deal, why would we not know what squad he was in?
