He was cool, but he's done. It would be lame if he came back. For one he has no right side, it was completely smashed by a boulder. Then he gave his left eye to Kakashi. In case you're counting, thats no eyes. He gave his left one away and the right one was crushed. He'd be half of a blind person if he came back.

Plus I personally feel it would take away from the story if he came back.

And main reason hes controlling obito's reanimated body (if that is true) is to hide his true intentions and identity. he supposed to be dead technically and wants people to think that. but im sure itachi knows whats going on and just doesnt care since his entire aim in life is to wait for sasuke to become strong enough to kill him .
