I woke up yet again to see Akio treating my wounds. When he saw me awake, he looked alarmed and flinched back a bit. “We’re going back to battle in a few minutes, but the higher ups told me to keep you here for a while,”
I raised my eyebrows and jumped up, and tried to run to Roy’s office. I grabbed my scythe and ran off, but suddenly, Akio appeared in front of me and bumped me back with the back of his scythe. I stumbled back and swung my scythe straight at him, but he merely teleported away and the next thing I knew, his blade was on my jugular. “Please stop,” he murmured.
I calmed down and tried to figure out what I could do. With Akio body guarding me around all of these wounded people forced me not to go into my 2nd form. I felt fine, but still, the memories lingered in my head. I knew that I couldn’t figure out what to do.
Suddenly, Thomas walked up to me and told Akio that he wanted to talk to me privately. We walked into an empty office as he looked at me blankly. “I have observed all of your past memory treatments, and your progress. You have quickly improved in short time, but it doesn’t mean that you can warrant a place in Special Forces easily. I know your interactions with Roy have influenced your interest in our group,”
“So what are you here to tell me?” I asked.
“You need to figure out your feelings before you want to engage in further training, both mentally and physically,”
“I don’t understand,” I said, but I felt more bitter, suddenly,” Why does it matter to you?”
“It matters because you are the next candidate to fill in the missing place of Major Frances Miller. His insanity was too dangerous anyways, but that isn’t the point. We can easily pull the strings to raise your rank, and it is our interest to put an elemental user in Special Forces, nothing more, nothing less. To help you enter, take this.” Thomas handed me a small metal dish, the size of a saucer.
“What’s this?” I asked.
“Use this miniature memory disk to help fight against your faults of your past life. Unlike, a real memory disk, you can use your reaper powers while fighting against memory. Use it wisely, as it will cool down for 24 hours after one usage, no matter if you won or lost the battle. Use it when you are at full strength. Now if you’ll excuse-“
Suddenly the wall of the main hallway exploded and I saw the petite Umbra prance in, shimmering in a bright golden light, temporarily blinding reapers as she sliced through them with her shadow dagger. Behind her was a line of shadow soldiers, various BDs, and General Heinrich Schmidt.
“Gust, Ventus,” My scythe spun in my palm and turned into air. I gripped a wind blade and threw it at the Umbra, but her light made me miss my aim. However, I couldn’t attack any more due to a group of shadow soldiers who hit me in the chest. I flew back, but I managed to slash at a few. They parried with various katanas and absorbed my air blasts.
I tried fending them off, but it didn’t seem to work. Occasionally, a familiar Reaper would get the attention of one, but another seemed to fill its place every time. I slashed to both sides, but they would always find a blind spot and hit me there. Finally, I concentrated a bunch of air into my hand and punched the ground. The floor exploded, hurling the soldiers back before they could absorb too much.
I started running through a hole in the wall, escaping the soldiers, but I didn’t see anyone else out there. In fact, everybody was trying to stay inside. Suddenly, I noticed a black chain dragged across the fuses of the mortar cannons, next to Thomas’s bag, which was now empty. Suddenly, I understood it all. I jumped back into the wall, making sure my eyes were closed.
Thomas shot a spark of light through the chain, setting off all of the cannons, which shot off shimmer stone, the rocks embedded in the walls that shine violently when hit with massive amount of light, AKA Thomas’s light sparks. The shimmer stone flew back into the crowd, most likely blinding the BD reinforcements.
Still, throughout the battle the enemies overwhelmed us. We occasionally did kill a shadow soldier or two, but they seemed to be doing more. Although Akio and Alice were both fighting beside me, the higher ups were fighting the enemy Umbras.
The dazzling lady went up against Thomas and Chase, who covered her body in darkness, nullifying her powers, and then poisoning her with the nectar rendering her unable to use spirit power. After that, they attempted to deal the killing blow, but Schmidt interrupted them. His arms were suddenly scaled. He threw a body control and spirit enhanced punch and shot both of them through the walls.
I ran up behind him and started charging up a ball of air in my hands. I tried to gather all of the wind around the whole base and concentrate it into this one point. It wouldn’t kill him, but every little bit helps. I then released a giant blast of air to straight at him, but he spun kicked it into oblivion, instead of it hurting him.
“For someone who wields such a devastating power, they cannot even hurt me. This is despicable.” The General hissed. He suddenly appeared in front of me and smashed me into the ground. “You may wonder why someone like me speaks fluent English, am I correct? I’ll let you on a secret that Mr. Hitler did not know. I was actually a refugee from Britain, but I was born of German blood and had already grasped the language. I went to Germany, for I thought they would win in the First World War, and I picked up the generic name of Heinrich Schmidt.”
“Why are you telling me this?” I coughed.
“I don’t see any reason why not to. I always like the enemy to realize their death fully before they perish. It adds the extra bit of pain,” he smirked. He lifted his hand up and drew some claws. I realized that it was the hand of a lizard! He shot the hand down at me. Even if I phased or slowed time, his spirit energy could still kill me. The higher ups were shot back through some wall, and I saw my death, yet again.
