I woke up with another guy in my room dozing off on a chair. He was the man next to Thomas when they came to get us after I unlocked level 2. The guy had short red hair that was a bit messed up and a small goatee. As I got out of bed, he blinked and looked at me. He had a strange smile and suddenly attacked me with his scythe. I remembered I fell asleep with level 2 still on so I countered it with a blade of wind.
His scythe was breaking through the wind blade and almost slashed me, but I pushed my palm out and shot a blast of wind and pushed him back. I started punching the air rapidly, but his body started moving in a speed that wasn’t possible. He dodged all of the attacks and then rushed up to me faster than ever. His hand went to my face as he…
…Poked me. He had stopped his running and poked me, sending me into a wall, “Hahaha. You’re not half bad! If I had it my way, you’d be in the Special Forces, but the old farts at the palace refused. Oh well, you still need practice either way,”
“W-who are you?!” I asked confused.
“Oh yeah, I’m the leader of the Special Forces, Roy Baker. Nice to meet you,” I shook his hand.
“You could’ve started with a handshake and not an all out attack…” I said as he laughed. “Wait, you’re the leader? That means you’re stronger than Thomas?”
“You mean equal-boy? He’s all bark. He just makes speeches before fighting; acting all cool, but I probably could beat him in a fight. He can’t really stand up to much, but whatever, he’s still a big-shot with everyone else,” This guy found Thomas weak. It was amazing.
“You’re name was Roy Baker, right?”
“Yes… I just said that 10 seconds ago.”
“You have an elemental level 2, right?”
“Y-Yeah, but I don’t like showing it off, especially indoors… Anyways, the old farts here wanted me to examine your memory. Why they told me out of all people to do this is out of question with them. If an elemental user is mentally unstable – no offense – then they will pose a threat when distracted by their past life. Akio told me all about it, and wow…” he remarked.
My eyes widened, as everything got blurrier. “Oh looks like that memory sickness is kicking in,” Roy said. He put a strange dish thing over my head and I was knocked out.
As I awoke, I was in a dream-like state. I looked around, but everything around me was blank and white. Suddenly, I could somehow sense an approaching force. I looked around and was hit square in the chest by a black beam. The beam went straight through me and I just witnessed everything. I literally saw every memory of me with Laura pass through me.
I could see every memory race through my eyes, faster than the speed of sound. I remembered the time under the stars, the times at the movies, the times at each other’s houses, the times on cold, rainy nights. It didn’t hurt in this dream state. I didn’t have migraines or throw up at the memories.
“Sacrifice, lust, solitude, and despair,” The judge’s words echoed through my mind.
“You have to overcome these if you wish to cope with yourself, today, we’ll start with the easiest, so lets roll them down,” said a voice that I instantly recognized was Roy’s. “You’ve sacrificed many things for her. In fights, you sacrificed your well being, and soon you would have sacrificed your life by meeting her,”
“Your lust is strong. I had the same problem. You have a lust for your power, almost to the point that arrogance is building, and your lust for Laura is overwhelming, especially after that last memory… Anyways, continuing on, we have solitude… After that last sight, you felt alone and apart from her, and couldn’t help yourself, bringing us to despair. You’re full of despair and loss of hope that you will overcome this, but you will like many people have… Most powerful Reapers have horrible memory sicknesses,”
“Okay, I think today we’ll start with solitude. This is a bit easy,” Suddenly, the black beam shrinked into a ball, and then, the scene changed back to my final moments, except I could move around. I saw my body being lifted and Laura hugging the guy. “Remember, you jumping to conclusions caused this. Analyze this and overcome it. In this memory sequence, you basically have full control of this scene,”
I walked over to the frozen time and looked at the guy closely. He didn’t look too familiar, he wasn’t on the football team, or was anyone remotely known. I looked at him carefully and analyzed how she was hugging him, even though this put an uncomfortable feeling in the back of my neck.
Suddenly, it hit me. After analyzing this, I looked at their faces. It couldn’t be a coincidence. I looked at their faces and they looked oddly similar. I put my hand on the black ball and memories rushed back. I remember that this shooting was after the Winter Ball.
He must’ve been a family member that came over for Christmas… No. It had to be different. I walked around and then reached into his pocket and found a wallet. I looked and his last name was the same as hers’. I was enraged at that moment. I had lived over a year and a half thinking that she was cheating on me secretly and finding out that it was her relative. I felt stupid. No. I felt less intelligent than any Reaper on the face of the earth.
The scene fazed away as I was brought back to reality. “One down three to go,” Roy smiled. “That was kind of funny that you were tricked by something like than,” he said with a small grin.
I rolled my eyes and then clenched my palms, “That still doesn’t solve anything! It’s over a year and she probably got a new boyfriend,”
“Dude, you got to learn to move on,” he told me, slightly annoyed.
“Yes I do,” he said with a stern voice. “Go to sleep, it’s 2300 hours right now, and your next assignment will be at 0600,” I rolled onto my bed and thought that even though my solitude was gone, being alone and confused was a whole of a lot better than knowing the truth.
