Mobile Version?
There's definitely a need for a mobile version of the forum.
Not necessarily for just the users, but I think it would be useful for staff too. Like how Maik has no internet for a month, now he's gotta use his phone or something. That's gotta be annoying. Is this even possible? |
Re: Mobile Version?
sometimes i do it on my ipod, but its really hard. it would be great if there was an official app for it

Re: Mobile Version?
I use my iPod touch a lot of time while on the forums. It's a bit more difficult and uncomfortable, but it's really not that bad. The mobile version works pretty well. Sure, an app would be helpful, but there's nothing wrong with the way it is right now.

Re: Mobile Version?
I believe a mod exists to do this.

Re: Mobile Version?
Though it's been brought up and discussed at length multiple times already, the main barrier in making something like this happen is that it actually tends to make the site alot less usable with no real benefit.
If you have a mobile device that's geared towards using the internet at all, like an iPhone or the better Android based phones, if your connection is good, the site loads and browses just fine. You can't watch youTube vids inline on the iPhone, but you couldn't do that with a mobile skin either. If you have a mobile device that's NOT geared towards using the internet, like the less 'smart' smart phones that cost a bit less, then making a mobile version of the site doesn't actually make it any more usable - your phone's just not designed to display the amount of information found on the typical internet site, and the only way to cater to that is to actually make contented targeted at those limitations. If you want the page to load as fast as it can and focus on just the posts and links, you can either turn off loading all the extra stuff like images and javascript in your built in mobile browser on your phone, and even turn off much of it through the site itself in your User Control Panel (like displaying signatures). And I write this as someone that uses and writes on this site 80%+ of the time on his iPhone in good old mobile Safari, on the front and admin ends (this post included). I even made a mobile version of the site already and played around with it for awhile way back when the idea was fresh, and all it did was make the site less usable while giving me one more thing to debug and develop . |

Re: Mobile Version?
Telephonic devices are the new Swiss Army Knife. But which service is which Schweizer Offiziersmesser? Is Android Victorinox and iPhone Wenger? or vice versa?

Re: Mobile Version?
First of all, the mobile device would need to have enough memory. The Viz staff would need to know how much memory the site would use.

Re: Mobile Version?
As Rice said, it changes, so that's not possible. But there's a point if you cut it off it won't make a difference how much memory it uses.

Re: Mobile Version?
I don't bother to read earlier posts, so meh. Restricting the site to be able to use it on a mobile device isn't really the best path. I just use my iPod and it works fine o.o

Re: Mobile Version?
I have an Android, so I already have a mobile version. :p
I remember trying to use my old phone to get on the site, but had no such luck. |
