What's a referral

I've always wondered but never asked. What is a refferal, how do you get one, how do you give the OTHER people one?

When you register, there is a box that says "Did someone refer you to this site? If so, type in their name."
And once the new person types in a name, like CardCaptor Sakura for example, her referral count will go up.

When you refer someone to a site. For example, if you got somebody to join this site and told them to put you as the referrer, you will get 1 referral.

A referrer is someone who 'told you about it'.
