Orochimaru sacrificed = Free Will Edo Tensei?
 

Orochimaru said he had to sacrifice himself in order to break the seal. This allowed him to get his arms back, which allowed him to cast Edo Tensei again in Chapter 618. Now we saw he resurrected the first-four Hokages as a result, but...did Orochimaru die?

Sacrificed would imply he did, which would imply that all four of the previous Hokage are free-will Edo Tensei(s) just like Madara is. Without their will binded, not even Sasuke can control them. This levels the playing field a lot.

...but why would Orochimaru do something good?

I see a few possibilities:

1. Orochimaru sacrificed himself and the previous Hokage are free-will Edo Tensei(s) and can act on their own will, just as Madara.
2. Orochimaru sacrificed himself but took over one of the white Zetsu just as he was about to die (due to being sacrificed) and will reasert himself, and perhaps take control of the Edo Tensei Hokages.
3. Orochimaru just cut himself deeply and didn't actually sacrifice himself. It was a figure of speech.

Thing is, as much as I'd love for all four Hokage(s) to have free will as an Edo Tensei, I think it gives too much Deus Ex power to the good guys.

He didnt he probably meant he needed to be cut. Oro does not seem one to give up his life that easily and also i would murk kishi for killing the last redeeming character.

Thats the one caveat to this self-sacrifice idea; Orochimaru doesn't seem to have any endearing qualities about him.

He didnt sacrifice himself entirely. He shred after his original body was cut. He s fine.

I figured you have to sacrifice your spirit, as the third did. But Oro sacrificed a dead body essentially. And the Shinigami was ok with that...

A better question would be, is the Shinigami dead now? Is the Dead Demon Consuming Seal now impossible?

I have a feeling that the Shinigami cannot be killed, if that mask truly was in the Uzumaki's possession then it must have been reusable. My best bet is that its in a weakened state or it just heals itself after it returns.

And did the Uzumaki create it in the first place?

Probably can still be used like before. What oro did was just release who is in there currently. Probably could reseal someone but would have to sacrifice someone again to get them out.

Minato sealed half that chakra to him AND Kushina, so more like 1/4 he has and 1/4 Kushina has... :p

everyone keeps saying minato sealed the fox's chakra i himself and that is not what happened. Minato stated he sealed half the fox's chakra in the reaper and the other half in naruto. This is just like the 3rd hokage sealed Oro arms in the reaper and not himself. If the other half was released then it will most likely go back into Naruto.

^ This is true. Minato didn't seal it in himself or Kushina. The yin was sealed away forever while the yang was sealed in naruto. Bits of yin chakra broke free and so that was sealed in menma
