Eonwe was the cheif Maiar, so I can see why he would be superior. So, Sauron and Gothmog are both in the same class, but it is implied that Gothmog would superior to Sauron because Morgoth favored him over his Lieutenant. Going back, Gothmog was the mightiest Balrog and Durin's bane wasn't too far below him. So, I believe that Durin' would have a chance at defeating him.

ed-t as a clarification Gothmog was probably in Morgoths top five and he may have been slightly favored in the beginning but it's very clear who was really the second banana

One of the reasons why Durins bane seemed so massive is because of the height issues too first age elves were all between seven and nine feet tall- Galadriel.and Cirdan kinda towered over the fellowship

Also jackson exagerated things but imagine if you will a nine foot elf lord would still reach Db's torso or there abouts, the height difference becomes less massive
