Gothmog should be able to curbstomp his vice captain

Glorfindel stomach punt or not he was the boss and supposedly only a notch or two below sauron

However, it was stated that Durin's bane was almost on Par with Gothmog. Both have the same weapons and are both in the same class.

But if we look at it from the text, Gothmog was above Sauron in power and rank. Essentially, Durin's bane and Sauron are on the same level.

Gothmog was hardly above sauron in any capacity

Gandalf as Olorin feared confronting sauron- eonwe and luthien are the only people who have canon vixtories over sauron and Mandos may have bailed Luthien out

If that's true, then wouldn't that suggest that Morgoth was below Sauron? Sauron, if I remember correctly, was Morgoth's lieutenant and Gothmog was his General in the First age. Eonwe was the cheif Maiar, so I can see why he would be superior. So, Sauron and Gothmog are both in the same class, but it is implied that Gothmog would superior to Sauron because Morgoth favored him over his Lieutenant. Going back, Gothmog was the mightiest Balrog and Durin's bane wasn't too far below him. So, I believe that Durin' would have a chance at defeating him.

Gothmog was nothing but his body guard and why would Morgtoh be inferior to Sauron?

Gothmog required back up against Feanor and only managed to fight him off, Sauron took on luthien an island busting time warper with a dog so powerful his barks caused rock slides that damned up rivers...and only lost to them because destiny interceded on Huans behalf

Sauron was arguably the most powerful Maiar to exist behind Eonwe.. With Gandalf being the wisest Maiar in existence and perhaps third or fourth most powerful

basically Sauron was without peer in his bosses camp, he was the greatest of the dark lords servants, he trolled god and gave him the middle finger, he survived a continent being busted and dropped on his head, he's the one who managed to fight Gandalf in a mind rape battle..and he's the one who was hand picked by Morgoth to carry on his legacy

Gothmog fell to Glrofindel an enormously powerful elf but not someone who could have slain Sauron

them only servant of Morgoth who you can argue is superior to Sauron is the black one, and that's mostly because he was super charged with Morgoths own essence was larger than three or four mount everasts and because he was able to withstand the silmaril feeding power to multiple Vanyar and Maiar and the scion of Numenor at the same time..for twenty four hours when no other dark creature could

and he was basically the ME version of a nuclear weapon

ed-t as a clarification Gothmog was probably in Morgoths top five and he may have been slightly favored in the beginning but it's very clear who was really the second banana

Ah, well that's enough clarification. Then Durin's bane would have a chance. He fought on par with Gandalf, with Gandalf ultimately being the victor.

no problem

Balrog vs Balrog fights should be close which ever way they go..my guess is based on their ranks they should still relatively close even if one was the elite leader or not

The thing is that i've forgotten how Gothmog looked. I believe he took on more of a Humanoid-Demonic form, where as Durin's bane took the form of a massive, demon-humanoid form.

Actually they could take whatever form they wanted as long as they were smoke.shadow.and fire

One of the reasons why Durins bane seemed so massive is because of the height issues too first age elves were all between seven and nine feet tall- Galadriel.and Cirdan kinda towered over the fellowship

Also jackson exagerated things but imagine if you will a nine foot elf lord would still reach Db's torso or there abouts, the height difference becomes less massive

Ah. I though he was somewhere around eighteen feet in length.
