I appreciate that, I really do. I kind of go back and forth but I think that's supposed to be rather common for this sort of situation. I'm on some new medication Trileptol or something like that, it's not an anti-depressant but more of a mood stabilizer. I'm trying to take my meds regularly, but going to the hospital really seemed to help I think. I was finally able to get some counseling and the other inpatients don't judge you with your story, which was very nice.

This is stuff that if you so much as bring up in a high school or middle school setting and angry parents will reaaaggg...If you try and teach it in college...you end up with protestors with pitch forks

for example if you study the ACW you start to notice it was actually really morally gray. Abraham Lincoln, who gets painted as this unimpeachable savior..does things that are..insanely questionable and gets raked over the coals by the US Supreme court for violating the constitution in ways that now a days would get a president a life time jail sentence.

The concept of industrialized total war, you see in world war 2 and Viet Nam was invented by Ulysses S Grant and William Sherman- they destroy entire southern cities, cripple their rail lines etc etc...thousands die from starvation because of it, thousands more are homeless

His Wrath of the Khans series about the Mongol Empire is pretty solid too and opens with "Imagine a time period, where so much time has passed since world war two that people begin to speak of Hitler as "well he was this brutal dictator but he also did remarkable things for the German people" This is what we do with Genghis Khan"

Not completely apt, because Hitler didn't really do anything "good" for the German people...beyond the "now" but yeah

also Ken Burns did a great documentary on Prohibition and the rise of the mobs as well.

As for sugar coating it and telling one side....its about money, you can't teach the American Civil War as it actually was in class...people would get too triggered or offended.

and production studios fear losing money..because history isn't sunshine and rainbows, or people can't handle anything but the kids glove version of what happened.

and if you don't mind podcasts, I'd recommend Dan Carlin, specifically the Punic nightmare series and judgment and Nineva. He tends to relate historical events in a more personal humanist way, sort of the way I try too. So you don't get boring droning, but perspective and decent quotes.

The Punic nightmare series is his best, its his narration of the invasion of Rome by Hannibal and it has this great line "Imagine you, your parents and your neighbors have to go out and fight an armored elephant in hand to hand to defend your neighborhood and families...Well that's what Roman kids were doing"

Judgment at Nineva is comparison between the Nazi Regime and the Assyrians and how long their civilization lasted on top vs ours, and a sort of Meandering through various atrocities.

There was also a great one by NOVA in the eighties about evolution, including the scientist who discovered Lucy, and how they named her and aborigines from Australia replicating the cave paintings.

    it's one of a kind..and I recommend it.

World war 2 in HD by the history channel is very similar and surprisingly powerful and touching and it has one of the most bad ass declarations ever delivered in history "America's goal is to prosecute this war until Japan and Germany surrender unconditionally, or else commit national suicide against our bombs!".

America the Story of US is also pretty decent but its a bit more hyperbolic

Yeah Ken Burns the civil war series. it' doesn't hold back at all, you're bombarded with thousands and thousands of civil war photos, including the most brutal depictions of slavery. Actors narrate reading letters and correspondences and there's even a hundred year old woman a black poet whose father was a freed slave, who escaped to freedom joined the union army and killed his former master during the war (because real life can be as epic as fiction) and she takes out the damn letter he wrote her mom and reads the account and stuff
