Well at one point he just stopped caring, you can tell this because he calls Yamcha a werewolf in one of his databooks then gives him a PL that would suggest omnipotence So he sorta is the opposite of kishimoto who seems to truly enjoy catering to the die hards and doing fanservice. Toriyama seemed to progressively try and make DBZ dumber and dumber and unwittingly created the fighting manga standard in doing so
All the comic franchises tend to have some good writers in there some of the time, but the fact that the characters continue undefinitely and it all tends toward 'middle story' keeps it all back in many cases.
Resetting and reviving as they've been doing is better, but the dispersing of authorial voice weighs many a thing down.
Dragon Ball would have been amazing if that happened. Very meaningful. You could tell he started to run out of ways in which to 'one up' things too. Even the toddlers were planet busters by the end, flying around, even fusing together .
Fusion's 'neat' but two on one would seem to trump any fused two for the fights they had.
I'm pretty much in the same boat as you regarding him a rather annoying troll but not super bad. You have others like Mo Gotti who are the type you need to ban on site.
Well I think it depends, DC and Marvel have some pretty grand and spectacular stories on such a vastly overpowered landscape...especially when it was Jack Kirby telling the story but for every one that was an award winner you had two dozen that like you said in regards to goku..kinda gone off the deep end.
That's Toriyama wanted to do apparently..have Freiza and Goku be the exception not the norm..that they would both die on Namek fallen titans...and the torch would pass to Gohan and Vegeta and keep things less insane.
I think fan demand and editorial pressure stopped him.
If he leveraged the definition of 'omnipotent' to be anyone that basically went beyond the Narutoverse I can see that working, but he didn't really try. If anything, I actually prefer the verses that aren't more or less 'broken' with people that have no rational to their abilities beyond them serving as progressively ridiculous plot devices. Goku's actually great, but by the end he probably died like a hundred times in that series, learned to fly in outer space, and by most accounts can kill the gods of his own verse. The actual gods . The balls on anyone involved in taking it there . Just make him a really good fighter. Have him pass the torch. Have that passing be hard. Don't just keep hitting the 'one up' button .
