Well, I believe it was a setup to probably one of the most AWESOME battles ever (Shikamaru Nara Vs. Hidan), but it was probably also to show how much more mature and grown up Shikamaru has become. Each loss has only made him stronger, and he learned from his mistakes. It was to show that Shikamaru could handle the loss of someone close to him without getting himself recklessly killed in revenge. It also showed the darker side of the story, because in the ninja world, success is never garunteed. It was certainly sad, but was not in the least bit uneccessary.

To show that Ino and Choji will never get screen time, even when someone close to them dies.

And to give Shika and a few others character development.

I think Kishimoto killed Asuma to show how he (Kishimoto) wasn't afraid to kill off good guys as well as bad guys. If you think about it, Asuma was one of the first good guys to be killed off (Chiyo was a good character too, but she hasn't been around long enough to have the same impact of Asuma'a death. Asuma was the first good guy to die who has been around for most of the Naruto series)

kakashi once said a wise line.
The next generation will always surpass the other.
I think he wanted that Shikamaru surpasses himself and Asuma by killing Hidan(?) something even Asuma couldnt do.

For the younger character's like Shikamaru and Naruto to "grow up" and fully realize their potential, it is necessary for their teachers to be gone and unable to protect and guide them. They have to find their own way.

This is a common element in storytelling, especially heroic storytelling. The hero characters must always complete their journey without the aid of a teacher or mentor.

I believe it had nothing do with showing he wasn't afraid to kill off favored characters. In fact, I've readf somewhere that people were so upset at Asuma's death that they sent fan letters asking him to kill off Hidan. And thus Shikamaru Vs. Hidan happened.

I HIGHLY doubt he would kill off Hidan just because a few fan letters. It was part of the plan he had in mind and just happened to coincide with the fans.

well fan mail is powerful because george lucas was going to kill luke and they sent him fan mail that if he killed luke they were going to kill him so he killed chewbaka instead( in the books)

That's a bit more death threats than fan letters.

Well, I do agree, but I think he at least changed the story a little bit because of those letters.

If he was to change the story every time he got a few fan letters he would be changing the storyline every week.

From what I heard it was a flood of letters.

I'm sure they get a flood of letters every week. It's just not realistic to change the story every time people complain or you will never have the product you want.

Possibly, but not necessarily. I don't know that Lee's place in the story really warrants that, but it could be that each character will lose their primary mentor. Shikamaru has lost Asuma, Naruto has lost Jiraiya, Sakura has probably lost Tsunade, and Sasuke killed Orochimaru. In my mind this will probably only apply to major characters, meaning only characters that are to have a leading role in the final resolution if the story. I guess it depends on Lee's place in the end.

Naruto is the main protagonist and hero of the story, and it is very typical that his mentor should die as a right of passage and catalyst to the development of new skills. This almost always happens to the main hero character in a piece of literature.

I heard an interview with Kishimoto where it was insinuated that Guy would not die but I don't know how long ago it was he could change his mind.

I don't think he will die either, from what I heard Kishi killed Jirayia and Asuma to mature Naruto and Shikamaru. Lee becoming a normal mature adult pretty much kills the character personality so I highly doubt that would happen.

A mature, adult Lee just doesn't seem right. :)

For the Plot. He needed to advance Team 10, which meant killing off their teacher and friend.

Yea a mature Lee would just be strange.

It was for Team 10 but more specifically it was for Shikamaru at least that's what I have heard.

It's good to hear Kishi-sensei actually looks at fan mail. ^_^

But, yeah, I agree that Asuma's death was for character development. If he didn't die, Shikamaru would still be overtly lazy.

I am sure it was partly to help mature Shikamaru. But, for me it showed me just how into the story I am. I bawled my eyes out! I got really emotional when Asuma died. I don't think I really saw it coming to tell you the truth.

well he needed to kill off someone. otherwise it would be one of those oh all of the bad guys die but none of the good guys. kind of like how he made nagato bring everyone back that had died but he did bring kakashi back so im not complaining(but i think he could have left shizune dead)
