I think that he probably did care about her, he just thought someone would get suspicious as to why he let Sasuke and a girl he was known to have a connection with live and probably ruin his overall plan.

Yep, Itachi-san did have a girlfriend. Madara told Sasuke this when he was talking abt the truth behind Itachi-san, stating that Itachi-san had wiped out his entire clan for Konohagakure, but kept Sasuke alive, which means, Sasuke's life is more precious than the village. Ya can find it in ep 139 anime:D

Madara said Itachi had a lover, Itachi most likely killed her because she was also involved in the Uchiha's plan to attack Konoha.
Itachi didn't kill Sasuke because he was his brother and he was young so he wasn't involved in that plan, if there were other Uchihas around the same age as Sasuke and that didn't know the Uchiha's plan I think Itachi would also leave them alive. I don't remember seeing kids death during that night.

i think she was just mentioned to show how much itachi really cared for sasuke, and bring up the fact that he wouldn't kill his younger brother. itachi was supposed to be someone who never talked much, somewhat of a socially awkward person. he never had anyone, from what has been shown.

According to Tobi/Madara, he had a lover whom he killed during the massacre. I believe it was just to measure the amount of love he had for Sasuke in comparison to everything and everyone else with that entire situation and to emphasize it even moreso.

If you ask me, I think the whole "Sasuke's life was more important than Konaha for Itachi" was something Madara said just to control him and with what he said it seemed true,but I think Itachi would try to really kill Sasuke(if he was still alive) because of what he's trying to do. I think that for Itachi, Konoha is more important than anything else.

I think that for Itachi, Konoha is more important than anything else.

I agree with this to an extent, but also realize that Itachi was completely prepared for either direction that Sasuke took, or at least had a very keen foresight of it.

And hoped he would take the same as he did with protecting the village. His insurance is Naruto and the power he gave to him.
