In terms of character, gameplay, et cetera.

RPG battle of the Gods.
Final Fantasy, though, for awesome characters and popularity. It also had puzzles, hidden bosses/summons, and lots of other cool stuff that Shin Megami Tensei just didn't have.
Still, both are amazing games.

The latest FF bored me to death. I took it back after 3 days of playing it. I just couldnt get into it. Graphics were awesome though

Both of these are fun. But Final Fantasy takes this I love these games so much and they were so addicting (aside from 11 and 12 which I found them to be very boring and dumb.)

Popularity means nothing. Shin Megami Tensei had awesome characters as well. Persona 4 was a detective's game. All Persona games have had hidden bosses. Shin Megami Tensei offers hundreds of demons, as well as the fact that you can combine them to make new ones.

I've been meaning to play a Persona game. The only FF games that I've played were FFI and FFVII.

Point taken. Still, there's a difference between combining summons to get new ones and having summons that are hidden in hard-to-reach places on the map and that are so hard to get, but at the same time so awesome. Although, I'll give P4 it's storyline. That was awesome.
There's also something to be said for the amount of successful titles in each (which is what I meant by popularity, I just didn't convey that well enough; my bad.) Pretty much every Final Fantasy from VII to X are great, while X-2 and XIII is pretty good (haven't played the rest). As for SMT, Personas 3 & 4 are great, but Digital Devil Saga wasn't that good, and P1 and P2 didn't look that great either.
Really, though, in the end I suppose it comes down to personal preference.

You should play VIII, IX, X and XIII. Also Personas 3 & 4.

You do realize that to get a high-level Summon on Persona, you have to either get it personally, which requires up to weeks of searching, or you have to combine up to seven separate Demons into one, which also requires searching, but gives you a boost bonus. On the other hand, you also have to worry about the day, and after that, there is your level as well as your status with the Devil type. Meanwhile, with FF, you just have to go through one boss fight.
XIII was terrible, considering the hype it was given. The only high points was the combat and the beauty of the game. The early FF games were great too. VI, III, etc. XI was badass as well.
Digital Devil Saga 2 was great. Revamped battle system, better plot, more interesting characters, etc. Then there is Devil Summoner, which is one of the best JRPGs for the DS.
You do realize that all games made in the late '80s-'90s could never compare to a game released in this decade, right?

You do realize that I said that "It's all a matter of opinion" which basicaly translates to "let's agree to disagree".
I have no desire to argue with you over personal opinion. If you wish to do so, go find someone else.
P.S. I SAID that I overhyped XIII and yes, I've played Persona. I know how the games work.
