Okay, found it. Let me know whatcha think! :D

The Beacon

Prologue

We were all silent. In the back corner of a dank room sat us. A looming light shone on the grey walls that were as cold as ice. Windows were perched on each side, with only a view of bones and off white rocks. Scattered everywhere, there were tables that were almost lifeless. Blank. A colorless solid. The room was like a dark dungeon calming those who had been wrong in their life. But in our opinion, we had done right. Or at least I should say that he did wrong. Axton. The second in command of our group, The Beacon. There were six of us. Now the six were going to be five. The reason for his death would be the very reason half the world was dying. The future was literary sick. He had given The Antidote for The Flame. Our group was the very few who had been immune to it. We weren’t allowed to give it to anyone because we had the qualities to survive it. Axton refused to listen, so he gave it to someone else. We all did. The thing was someone told on Axton. We didn’t know who did it. Axton was happy though. No one was as sad as Nonnie, his nine year old little sister. They had let us come to see. They decided his fate. But who would decide ours?

“Axton… why?” I asked with my voice barely a whisper from fighting through all the tears.

“Cecile, it’s our creed, a life for a life.” Axton stammered through a clenched mouth. Nonnie was still crying and she eventually laid down on the cold pavement. I titled my head to look at Axton, the short hair that sat on my neck flew over to the other side.

There were other people in the room. The sad wave was hitting everyone in many ways. The saltine tears that stroked their faces had become our only light that something else was outside the dungeon. They were like rain, giving hope and light that something might grow. It was also gloomy. A life for a life. That’s how we thought of it.

“Wow…what a loser! Why didn’t he hide? He should have gone somewhere else. He came and faced his fate.” Said the dork whom I will only name as Riley. Similar to his sister, Natalya. (Extra annunciation on the “a”)

“Which person was it? The one who received the antidote, I mean. You always go with him so, you’d know…” I fade off. Riley nodded and turned, showing his toothpick back. They had the ribs sticking out as usual. Axton was laughing. Nonnie was a dead, flapping fool who was ready to forget her brother in the world.

Our leader, Kouki, was too busy with who was going to be next second in command, to actually care about his past one. Nonnie would be mine to take care of when Axton went, meaning I’d be stuck with the big buffoon. Quietly, the steps of doom brought news that the guillotine was hungry for more people. Anyone of the people here could have been taken but the odds had decided to slim down to Axton.

The woman coming to get him was slender, tall and had a perfect figure. She was much like most of the group members of The Beacon. She was obviously working for Them. She was also my sister. I didn’t learn that until after Axton’s death. I was gone from this place at birth, and that’s all I know. And will ever know.

“Guards, this man is next, take him to the top. And this,” She was holding a clip board. She lifted to paper up and flipped that perfectly long hair that dangled like a video game character’s hair. Her fingers went to back to paper and she started to search again. The black painted nail landed on something. She smiled and looked with a cat grin. “… group, The Bacon, I believe.” So sad. No one ever gets it right.

Axton was picked up by his arms and thrown onto the floor. The pale hands that were slung onto his body were placed behind him and he was bound and gagged.

“Well, are you coming then?” The women asked. Her voice was loud and demanding. The way she walked was the very meaning of how much she thought of herself. And in my opinion, that was a lot. The other people in the Beacon, excluding Nonnie, Natalya and me, ignored her and went back to weeping.

Nonnie heard the voice and rose up as if she had been revived by an archeologist. Natalya and I started pass up, but Axton – who had looked like a corpse already – then gave a head nudge to us and we were forced to go up.

***

The stairs were old planks of wood that most people would forget about. Wood had a name for the color that they were, but, they were blank. No color, no identity. It was just like what happened when The Flame hit someone. It was as if their identity were gone. Just how They wanted it.

“Cecile, Nonnie and Natalya.” We didn’t look up. I was too busy looking at the wood. “Make sure no one ends up like me. Dead I mean. Just… yeah, I’m really sorry guys, I didn’t even mean it. Make sure you find out who dared to betray me. Do you have it?” His voice shoots out rays that send coded messages into our hearts. The rays send shock wave through us. We nod. Nonnie goes back to crying her eyes out.

A brown door greets us and suddenly sunlight bores into our eyes. It’s not sunlight; the skies are an endless grey. There’s no lumps or blue patches in it. It was as if someone took a paint brush and re-colored the sky.

The guillotine was the only thing that was colorful.

“You, go over here, do you understand what I’m saying?” A man with a mask over his face screeched. There was a small wooden post in his hand and then he eventually shoved us back. My heart started to shiver.

“Cecile, what’s going to h-happen to him, I don’t want him to die! NO!” Nonnie grabbed my leg and hid behind it. The blue jeans that fit my thin legs were being stretched out as Nonnie pulled on them. My hand felt the presence of an intruder and she was moved off. Natalya was then an available protector. Nonnie went over and hid. She still kept one eye out and she then looked.

“No more, shall those who are normal shall rise. Never again! This man is proof. Let this be a reminder to all of you imbeciles!” A man shouted with his over-confidence showing up in his large voice. Axton was then grabbed by his arms and shoved to the ground. Natalya turned to me.

“How cruel can people be?” She asked. That is one question I’ve never been able to answer myself.

But, before I could actually say something, Axton was grabbed and clasped to the head holder. The silver blade was raised as high as one of those clouds that Axton would join. I was going to watch, but I closed my eyes. Sight had left me, and the only thing that was giving me a mental picture was the very fact that a scream was made.

Sight returned and I found Nonnie’s eyes had changed. They no longer looked sad, but with the snake like eyes from a character in a cartoon who had seen someone die. That person was her own brother. Her face had turned down into the smile of evilness and a scowl. She looked as though she was going to talk but it wasn’t to anyone. It could have been to someone she loved. Who knew?

“I will get them.” That was all she uttered. And that was enough for me as to why she was a darkened girl.

Three Years Later

At first I can feel the darkness in my eyes, but then light slowly creeps into it. They want to stay closed, but I know I must get up. Pink light flies into my eyes as they open. My hand soars to my face and it darkens a little bit. But not by much. My once blond hair, now brown, had been sprayed all over my face in my sleep. I rise up like a mummy and stretch my arms up. Ever since Axton died, I’ve been growing it past my shoulders. Now, at waist length, I still find my hair still unmanageable. I actually find most everything about my hair horrible. Even my dirt colored eyes. They’re boring, though, my life isn’t. Today, we’d be going back to the place where Axton had been captured. Nonnie had been waiting for this moment since his death. If anything, she would know that the one who betrayed him would be there.

The sun has cast dark shadows that fit neatly fit upon the walls. Warm sunlight gave my hair a peck on the ends. My legs slip over the side of the bed and I’m on the ground now. There’s small tapping around me and I know that Nonnie has woken up. She’s completely excited about this. Kouki had consulted me over and over again wondering if this was a good thing. (Since I was the only one who had stayed normal after the death of Axton. Well, close enough anyway.)

I just shrugged my shoulders and nodded with agreement. He thought that I had been taken over by Nonnie’s darkness. I assured him that I knew what I was doing.

“You’re up for once! This must be some sort of time warp!” Riley says as he bursts into my room. I can tell that he hasn’t been sleeping well enough. The already dark shadows in my room completely darken his face. The lines from the tiredness have changed into lines of evil and revenge. Yet, his eyes have the look of regret at the same time.

“Riley, stop. It’s just… Well, we’d all still be there if it weren’t for… him. Axton I mean. Now we’re going back to where he was coming from… it’s just, well, nerve racking. Nonnie has changed from the sweet nine year old that she was three years ago… into a vengeful twelve year old. So you can see why I’m nervous.” I blurt out with my eyes and mouth. Riley nods.

“I see, so what you’re saying is about the fact that she has gone well, mental over something that seems like a betrayal, but it isn’t.” He alludes both sarcastically and serious at the same time. Is that even possible?

“Yeah, go get dressed, okay? We’re leaving in one hour. Got it?” My tone of voice makes Riley shake and he nods. Something is definitely up. I have a feeling it has to do with where we’re going tonight.

Then it’s time for the depressed spoiled brat to come in. Her short and angled hair has been dyed back to its original color. It’s a beautiful auburn, but it’s dull, there’s no golden shine to it. It’s boring and there’s nothing you‘d keep focus on when looking at on her. It’s just a boring blah face. Except, she has pierced her nose. I can tell from the bright stud that sits in the middle of her nose.

“Hey, you.” Apparently, Nonnie has come to the form of calling people in second person. “We’re going soon, Cecile. I don’t want to miss this. You got it?” My feet turn into large and monstrous feet as soon as I hear her use that kind of tone with me.

“Do not talk to me like that ever again! Understand? Now, I want you to go and get ready.” Nonnie rolls her eyes and makes a monstrous noise from out her mouth. Her feet act like massive boulders as she stomps out. There’s something wrong with that child, I swear. Putting my hair into a pigtail, I walk over to the bathroom and get ready.

***

Kouki is the first to come in after my shower. From his face, I can tell he’s decided where we should go after our stop at the Place tonight. (We move from place to place after we help someone. It’s a common custom of ours)

“Cecile, since we’re going back tonight, could you possibly watch Nonnie? She’s going to run off I think. And I know you used to watch her,” Really big emphasis on the used to. “I really think that you should keep an eye on her. You know just in case she…” I know what he was going to say. “… wanders off.” But, I can’t let that keep her from doing something like that.

“Kouki, this is her choice, you should let her be.” Kouki’s already angered face has let up a little. He just nods. He shakes his head and laughs.

“She’s going to go crazy with this, so I’ll be watching her instead… Okay?” With a quick turn I walk out of the room.

“You’ll be dead by then Kouki, you’ll be dead.”

Found the rest, thank god. So, here's the ending! :D

Natalya starts to whimper as we go to the exact stop. It’s the exact opposite as we left it, burned down with no evidence that it’ll grow back. The sweet sound of those birds that echoed around has left. They’re smart. But we’re not.

“Alright, guys, we’re here tonight you got it?” Kouki shouts. Riley, Natalya, Nonnie, Sage and I all nod. (Sage was the newest member after Axton died, she never talks. Well, she does, but hardly ever.)

“Yes, we understand.” I stammer with a little sliver of fear. Kouki nods and walks over to the exact spot as to where They found him and took him away from us. Sage rolls her eyes and walks across the empty canvas landscape. Natalya walks to the trees that once sat in her view. Now all she gets is the full blasting view of the setting sun. Nonnie trails like a duck with her gaping upon the trees that she and Axton once climbed.

Riley still has his look of sorrow upon his face and falls down like a crow. He lets his eyelids go closed. The body goes still.

“Cecile,” A hoarse voice calls to me, “Tell Nonnie something... that I should’ve… Never mind, I’m done anyway.” It’s Riley. The once happy face that sat upon his head before Axton died had been replaced by a look of paleness. I have the feeling that it will never ever go away.

“Nonnie hates us all.” I whisper.

“She doesn’t hate you.” A voice confirms.

It’s Nonnie. She propped herself up against the last tree that stood there. Her face has been painted by the soft and moist tears from her sadness. I want to walk over there and give her a hug and tell her it’s all right, but I know that she’ll say that I should stop treating her like a child.

My eyes start to hurt as I to try not to cry.

The wet paint shall not visit my face ever.

I walk over to the spot where I had set up camp three years ago. It’s deja vu.

***

Darkness leaves me as I’m roused awake by Sage’s incisive screaming.

“Cecile! Oh, my gosh, you need to come now. I mean right now! I’ll tell you what happened first. Nonnie knew we were asleep and so she went to see if the people who took Axton came back. But all she found was Riley! And Them. It was Riley! He told on Axton so we could have the money to survive. Axton knew! So They killed Riley and Nonnie! They’re both dead! We’re next! Riley wouldn’t tell would he?”

That’s when I know why Nonnie acted like a dark child. The liquid of revenge has trickled down my spine and filled my head with plots. I was going to exact my revenge on those who killed Nonnie and Riley. Riley was just a pawn.

“Sage, leave. You’re going to have make sure Kouki and Natalya get out now. Natalya especially, considering the fact that Riley is his sister. Do you have it?

“Yeah, yeah.” She lifts up her short legs and stands up. She kicks aside the tent door. But, she doesn’t run. She walks slowly. I get out from the cold and yet sweat covered sleeping bag and slowly move the door away. Instead of finding Natalya and Kouki running away, they’re sitting right outside of my door.

“What are you guys doing?” My voice shivers.

“Sage told us that you wanted to talk to us.” Natalya discreetly says.

“I told her to get you out what could she…” But then I know already. “Sage works for Them. She’s a plant. But why her?” I’m interrupted by Sage herself.

“You sicken…” She says standing over us… but then she falls down like a statue and lies there..

[I]“Well, I think that settles that. Anyway, I’m sorry to say that Sage and Riley are in fact cousins. Sage forced him to do it. Axton knew and wanted you guys to get money. Ha. Ha. And she wanted The Beacon to fall apart for some reason. I’m not sure why. Off that topic, she knew you’d all get revenge if any of you died. Although we don’t like your group, making you all betray each other is terrible.” I look up to find the exact women who took Axton up to his doom.

“So… you’ll leave us alone then? Hopefully.” I ask, a little unsure.

“Of course, Cecile.” Natalya and my face go up in shock.

“H-how do you know my name?” My voice going higher on each word.

“Ha. I’m related to you of course. Take good care of her Kouki!” She starts to walk away, but then she grabs Sage’s body on her shoulder.

“Kouki…” I start to say, but he then tells the story anyway.

“We took you all from Them. That woman is a part of the organization to get rid of Them. And so are you. Nonnie and Riley were selected because of Sage and Axton. They had nothing to do with any of this. Which is why They took them instead, and They used them to get rid of us. Weird, right? Anyway, we have a lot more people to save. Alright, c’mon.” Natalya and I look for a moment and nod. We take up our knees and we start to walk, but then when Kouki is a few feet away from us, Natalya grabs my arm and throws herself in front of me.

“I now know why we’re called The Beacon.”

I do too.

The End

HELL YEAH! TAKE THAT COMPUTER! :P

I'm not as confident in real life as I am online.
