I always use deidara and killer bee as supports, unless I have to change strategy, they just work good together IMO.

Suigetsu is a bad choice. For long range, you'll want Deidara. Undisputed kind of projectile supports.
For close range, you might want to consider Hinata, Neji, Pain for both guarding and attack. Hidan also works well for trapping the opponent and performing an UJ. Good players will see that coming, though. Now choosing supports will mostly need to be about what you want to accomplish, I went in depth about my personal choice if you want to read it. If not, just go with Deidara and Pain/Hinata/Neji.
I don't really play any of those characters you chose and I don't know how you fight, but these are my support setups:
- Sakura (attack) and Hinata (balance): I use these two when I expect to fight close-range characters - people that plan to get all up in my face to attack and/or spam me with rasengans or other attacks that require them to get close. (Typically narutos, kibas, neji/hinatas, lars, minato, pain etc.) Sakura is set to attack because my ninjutsu knocks the opponent back, and Sakura knocks them back forward, so I can hit them again. She is amazing for punishing those narutos who like to sneak in close to you, because if you jump in the air and summon her she will come flying out and slam into them. Hinata is for when they actually do get close to you, to get them off you. And I set her to balance just in case I happen to get caught in an ultimate jutsu (Sagepain taught me the importance of this, hehe)
- Sai (balance) and Konan (balance): I use these two when I'm playing keep-aways and turtlers. These are typically your puppeteers, often itachis, deidaras, tenten, shino, temari, and most tobis tend to play keep away as well. For one, they are both balance so that I can use their chakra throws, and their chakra throws are two of the best tracking projectiles in the game.
Sai's ink birds are definitely the best because you simply cannot avoid them. You must block unless you want to be hit. Shino's also track pretty damn well, but I choose Konan over Shino because Shino's general support is garbage as opposed to Konan's origami tower thing which tracks well and if it hits can stun the opponent leaving them open to my ninjutsu.
- Deidara (attack) and Tobi (balance) - My old secondary. I don't use them much anymore because Sai and Konan have proved largely superior when it comes to complimenting my playstyle. But Deidara's support has the best tracking, and Tobi tends to take people by surprise. And if he doesn't, he will at least make them move or guard. And if they guard, they will sometimes do so for a long period of time. I find that he's great for people who try to maintain distance. It staggers their swag for a bit and gives you a chance to get in close if necessary.
Deidara is just useful in general because of how difficult it is to dodge his birds. Most don't know how (I've only recently figured out how and even then it's risky since the birds will occasionally perform a friggin 360) so this will make them stop and guard almost without fail. If you're having trouble getting in close, both of them work well but Deidara is almost fool-proof.
There are other good supports, but these are the only ones I ever use... at least in ranked matches where it's important to me to win. You'll have to find something that compliments how you play, because like you said supports are useful. Simply switching out supports can have a dramatic effect on gameplay. Here are some honorable mentions:
- Hidan: A lot of people use him to trap people in his combo and then perform an ultimate jutsu. This often requires them to dash forward and drop him. So if you're a close-range fighter he might be useful for you. If you have a good UJ that could work in combo with him he might also work well.
- Chiyo: Similar to Hidan since she traps the opponent in a physical combo. But I find her inferior since it doesn't last nearly as long. If you're quick on your toes, though, she'll work well because while it's shorter it's harder to substitute out of it.
- Pain and Neji: Pretty much because they're just like Hinata.
- Tsunade: Because they're just like Sakura
- Killer Bee/Sasuke/Kakashi: I honestly don't really know when to use supports like this since they don't do much for my playing style, but they run pretty damn far and have decent enough tracking to at least make the opponent back off of you.
So I say choose your supports based on what you want to do. The way I came about picking sai and konan was this - I was playing a puppeteer which were always difficult for me. At first I was using Sakura and Hinata. Well puppeteers rarely get in close and will quickly try to get away. Also, close-range fighting is not my strength, so I found that having them was practically useless.
I then switched to Deidara and Tobi, which helped a lot since they both would at least make the puppeteer stop for a moment which would sometimes give me an opportunity. However, that's when I was wrongly thinking that I needed to melee against puppeteers. I eventually realized that my greatest strength against puppeteers would be projectiles. If I constantly bombarded them with projectiles that would keep them on their guard, and then possibly break that guard, and at the very least keep them on the defensive.. I might have a fighting chance.
That's when I switched to Sai and Konan. When set to balance they work wonders against puppeteers who jump around, as Sai's birds will always catch them. They then stop jumping, and that's when I start attacking their guard. Each hit counts. This allowed me to really stop a puppeteer in their tracks and give me a fighting chance as a keep-away player.
So decide what it is you want to do, what it is you need to do, then choose your supports based on that. It works wonders.

Yeah, Sakura and Sai make great supports when together. Haha I was just about to post again and say that if you want a balanced support team for when you come across characters that could be both close range spammers and keep-aways (naruto can play both roles pretty damn well) you can mix and match.
If I'm fighting a person who plays Naruto or Itachi, who can be trouble in different ways, I'll sometimes choose Sakura and Sai. Sai for his ability to stop the jump-shuriken tactic and general keep-away spam, and Sakura for her punishing slam against those nasty rasenganers.

Oh, no, you can't do that. It would be cool if holding down the support button let you, but it doesn't. Well I'm pretty sure it doesn't. I've never actually tried but if it did I probably would have seen it before. So no xD

The only thing that may be good about Shikamaru is that he kind of stuns the opponent for a moment. If you're quick this might make it possible to use this opening to UJ or team attack. But honestly I've never tried it for myself so I don't know for sure.
But if you wanted a stun, Karin is better I think. I believe her range might be a bit shorter, but she stuns for a good three seconds if she hits. Which is time enough to not only hit a super attack but to charge up to one and hit it if you're a little low on chakra.

this is just what i do, so dont blame me if its not too good lol,
but for close range i would pick...sage naruto, hidan, killer bee, or maybe taka sasuke. Lars is VERY close range but is good for sending someone flying. :D
long range i personally pick itachi or yamato, but you could pick sasuke kirin, or minato
