They are both correct. I just like "Pain" more since it actually goes with his theme of pain, and "Pein" looks weird to me.

^This. "Pein" is the Japanese name written in Romaji (English writing/letters). Even though there is a Japanese word for pain, they borrow the English word "pain" as his name. (It's similar to how some characters in the Japanese anime, like Naruto, sometimes say "Thank you" instead of "Arigatou (gozaimasu)"-they are borrowing an English phrase.) Therefore, since "pain" is an English word, we spell it how it's spelled in our language; however, if it was spelled that way in Romaji, it would be pronounced like "pine," so they change the spelling to Pein so that it will be pronounced the same as it is in English.

So, I guess, since I spell these things the way the English manga spells them (Hyuga and Yuhi with one "u" instead of two, Choji and Kankuro without the "u" after the "o"), I spell it "Pain".

If you read Bleach, you know who Ulquiorra is. However, how can Ulquiorra be spelled the way it is if no such symbols exist in Japanese that could spell it that way? The answer is, it isn't spelled Ulquiorra. The actual romanization of the symbols used in his name spells Urukiora. But no one cares. Ever. No one sparks a huge controversy over whether it should be spelled Ulquiorra or Urukiora. Why? Because that is how it should be spelled. It was, is, and always will be the intended spelling. Pain's case is slightly different. The symbols Pa and In actually do exist in Japanese. However, the author chose Pe and In so that when pronounced by a Japanese person, it would actually sound like Pain. The only reason the Japanese don't spell it the way it's intended is so it can be pronounced the way it's intended. Either way, it was always intended as Pain. The translator who put his name as Pein was completely ignoring the author's intentions, and sparked a huge, unecessary controversy.
