And it just seemed sorta dumb concept-wise. I remember they were advertising their new shows and im pretty sure two of them were Yu Yu Hakusho and Naruto, and i remember thinking "well, i think ima check out that naruto thing, but the other one looks pretty silly." xD
Ended up really liking both of them, but naruto def takes the cake i gotta say. xDD

that ending was work of art..
if you watch it you'll get it...
Yomi/Makuro was techincally seen as a villain but the tournement showed sportsmenship that would bring order in demon world,
Yusuke lost his last match because there was no reason to win any anymore by how things were going, Yomi changed his views of the world when he fought Yuseke.. Yomi wasnt a threat to the world anymore... instead Yomi wanted to focus on his son and to further his sons capabilities.. thats true art.. :)

Probably Chapter Black. Some of the characters there got good backstories and Yusuke VS Sensui was one of the best fights of the anime, if not the best. It was also the longest in the entire series.

I am a HUGE YYH fan, it's among my favorite mangas of all time.
I used to watch it on Cartoon Network but never finished it until recently. I read the entire manga and I gotta say it's great.
My favorite characters are Kurama and Hiei. Kurama was a genius who would always outsmart his opponents, and while he generally seemed nice, he was always ready to kill the opponent when necessary and is always epic. Hiei was pretty cool, being the speedster of the series and having all of his interesting fire techniques, plus his backstory was really interesting and I felt it gave a lot more detail to his character.
YYH starts out kinda slow but it still good. I really liked the Dark Tournament, a lot of interesting fights and the development of each main character's power. I also liked Chapter Black, it really brought an interesting perspective into play and showed Sensui, an evil counterpart to Yusuke. The Three Kings Arc was pretty good too but the final tournament didn't show much in the manga. I liked how the anime showed a lot more fights.
People seem to love series like Naruto and Bleach, but honestly I'd say that Yu Yu Hakusho is much better than both of them. It has better characters, a more interesting plot, and interesting fights. Heck, I'd go as far as to say it's better than Dragon Ball, although that's just my personal opinion.
Believe it or not, YYH was my first Anime.
I loved it.

YYH is a great anime. All of the characters are likeable and each of them are very different. The english dub was excellent. The only problem for me is after Shisui. I guess the last saga good because it tied up loose ends but by then i just wanted it to end. It just got kind of boring for some reason.

It kills me how everybody likes the Anime better.
I think everybody liked the anime better for a couple of reasons.
A) It aired on Toonami which most people will think of when they think of Yu Yu Hakusho.
B) It had an entertaining dub. Despite how liberal the dub was from script, it didn't really bother anyone since few people knew what the original dialogue was like.
C) It's one of those anime shows that was executed very well in terms of not falling into any obvious cliche (you wouldn't think of standard shonen if you were told the plot in the beginning is about a 14 year-old boy who thinks his life sucks until he realized people miss him after getting hit by a car, so he does good deeds to attain his normal body back).
Not only that, but that show was one of those few shonen titles that didn't suffer any filler to prevent the pacing of the story from feeling lost or like it's dragging it's feet.

you got to be kidding me the last 2 sagas were amazing better then anything ive seen in Dragon ball at the time.
I prefer to compare them to itself rather than another show. Though granted Yu Yu Hauksho didn't seem to drag itself toward the end that much, unlike DBZ.
It just felt to me that it didn't need to go on. The next saga was decent, I didn't like that whole Yusuke is now a demon part though at the end. And I felt the final saga had so much potential but they ruined it. It started suffering from making the villains to forgivable too. From The Dark Tournament and after all the main villains had some secret reason behind what they did and it was rooted in some forgivable/understanding cause, or they were just likable in general. It was cool with TDT because that was really the first that happened, but then the next saga did it again, and then the last one did it again although to a lesser extent.
I like my bad guys having more depth than just 'evil is awesome' as much as the next person, but it needs to be broken up with some other truly evil guys, at least. Otherwise it get's stale essentially seeing the same bad guy over and over.
Meh, it's still one of my favorite shows ever, top 5 for sure. I just could of done without the last 2 sagas personally.

i see were your coming from about villains but Sensui was the last villain after the chapter black saga we didnt get any more true villains but we did learn more about the 3 main characters likes yuske, kurama and hiei which was awsome most anime/manga doesnt show us that type of stuff they even gave us younger toguro,s background which was amazing and then later the brought elder toguro back which was shocking to me.

YYH was one of the few animes that I preferred dubbed over subbed. It's probably because I liked Kurama's voice better in the dub, and he's my favorite character of the series.
I think I liked Hiei's English VA more than his JP one, although his JP VA is still good, since he was the person who voiced Viral from Gurren Lagann IIRC. I guessed Chuck Huber was more fitting for Hiei to me.

The thing about the villains is that none were truly pure evil, well actually the minor demons in the beginning were evil but after that it wasn't mindless destruction and hatred.
Toguro was a normal person who was corrupted by power and greed and became a demon, but despite his lust for power he wasn't evil, he just sought to find a suitable opponent, although that was not evident at first.
Sensui seemed like an evil mastermind at first, but then you learn more about his true objectives and he doesn't seem like such an evil person anymore. Sensui was a really interesting villain in my eyes.
After that, there was no real "villain", it was just an all out dispute for control over Demon World, with no right or wrong side.

I didn't like the ending of YYH much. It was okay, but it seemed a bit lacking in my opinion. It wasn't horrible, but it could have been better.
DBZ is a good series and all and it will always remain in my heart as my very first anime, but honestly I"d have to agree that YYH>DB. Personally I thought YYH was better because it had more of a plot and the characters had more personality. YYH was filled with interesting characters, while the only two great characters I can recall from DB are Piccolo and Vegeta.

Of course, if the ending was rushed by the authors editor, I guess that would explain why the anime felt rushed. >>

Indeed, maybe if it wasn't for the quality of the rest of the series it wouldn't have been so noticeable, but I suppose that fact does go in YYH's favor rather than to its discredit.
Pretty much, that shows why the series had such a strange finish when compared to how the rest was going.
