I sort of agree with you, i wouldn't say that hate is a huge theme in the show even with the "evil" characters because so many of them have different motivations like you said greed, envy, and especially revenge. But on the other hand all of those feelings are closely tied into hatred.

But for the show over all I'd say it's love, they keep driving home the importance of love and friendship and emotion bonds. But you really can't have love with out hate so who knows?

Love has almost nothing to do with the series besides a few pairings. The majority of the plot revolves around hate.
Deidara and Sasuke hated itachi.
Gaara initally hated everyone.
Naruto almost hated everyone.
The list goes on...

i say love. because in this series most of the hate is driven by a love for someone or something else. so most situations are love and hate. and then the extra love themes. so it adds up to love the way i see it
