Alright this is a reply to Wooster's thread, which highly describes all the abilities and advantages of the sharingan.
This is going to be the same idea, but applied to understanding the Rinnegan.
Alright so whats is the Rinnegan?
We know it is the ultimate ocular kekki genki
We know that it was possessed by the Sage of the Six Path's (Rikodou)
and that it has the potential to change the world for either the better or worse. But what exactly does it do? This is my opinion.
I believe that, in a way, the Rinnegan is the sum of all ninja powers, techniques, jutsus, abilities, molded into one. Since it was originally possessed by the Sage of the Six Path's, we know that it is descended from a very powerful ancestor. Since Rikodou is known as the "father of all ninjutsu" we have to assume that this is, in part, due to the fact that he had the Rinnegan. But what exactly is it capable of?
First off, we have too look at what happened after the Sage of the Six Path's sacrificed himself, to separate the 10-Tailed Beast, into nine weaker entities. It is known that he had to younger brothers (or was it sons? I can't remember) no matter, it is known that he was "passed along"
into these two others. By doing so, his kekki genki (the Rinnegan) split itself into two separate kekki genki; the Sharingan and the Byukugan. The two inheritors of these ocular jutsu's then went forth to form the Senju and Uchiha clans. So by knowing this information, we can assume that the Rinnegan possessed some of the same abilities as these two descendant kekki genki.
Perhaps users of the Rinnegan are able to read the movements of their opponent easier? Or perhaps they can also see chakra in a persons body?
These are all possibilities that user of the Rinnegan may posses.
But it is is unlikely that Rinnegan users posses ALL of the abilities of both, as some of the abilities of these two ocular kekki genki were awakened as they developed;. ex, it is doubtful the Rinnegan can use any of the abilities of the Mangekyo Sharingan, as this ability awakened as the Sharingan developed.
Since we have a very limited amount of information on the Sage of the Six Path's we can only base all of the information regarding the Rinnegan, off of Pain.
So, what can Pain do?
Well his main ability lies with the fact that he is able to split his consciousness evenly among six bodies (seven counting Nagato) This has several advantages for him. For example, all of the bodies of Pain (called the sic paths of Pain) can share each others eyesight. So what one body can see, so can all the rest. This makes it hard for opponents to sneak up on him, or attack his blind-spots, and it makes it much easier for Pain to make quick, tactical techniques using the bodies in coordination. Also, since the bodies he uses were once LIVING shinobi, it can be assumed that the Rinnegan is able to bring back dead bodies to an extent.
It is unknown if Rikodou was able to use this technique, as he is not shown demonstrating it. But since he also possessed the Rinnegan, we have to assume that he did possess it. A hint to this may be how Rikodou was able to split the 10-tails into 9 weaker monsters, much like how Pain can split his consciousness evenly.
Pain, using his Animal Path, is also able to summons several monstrous creatures, each one under his control. Each of these animals have body piercings and and chakra rods, as well as Rinnegan eyes. Using this information, we have to assume that using some unknown technique, Pain can insert chakra rods into any living creature, and assume control of it.
It is not known whether these animals share vision with the other six paths because of their Rinnegan's.
Another ability that Pain was able to demonstrate was his skill at mastering a wide range of jutsu in a very short amount of time. When he was a child, and training with Jiraiya, he was shown to have mastered several advanced techniques in only a matter of weeks. During his fight with Jiraiya and the Leaf Village, we see that he possesses one of the largest range of jutsu of all characters in the Naruto universe. This may be in part due to the fact that the Sage of the Six Path's created (or helped create the first forms of) all known jutsu, probably thanks to the Rinnegan.
Pain's Deva Path was also able to use a variety of gravity-based attacks and jutsu's that no-one we have ever seen before use in the Naruto world. These gravity attacks are extremely powerful, able to level Konoha and the surrounding area.
Since the Rinnegan is the original source of the Sharingan, it is also presumed that Pain is able to control tailed-beast's to an extent. He is also able to extract their essence using the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path technique. This technique summons a large demonic statue with several eye's. Every time a tailed-beast is absorbed one of the eyes open. This technique is also shown to be able to be used for offense. For example, when Pain was a child and he used it to suck the souls out of Danzo and Hanzo's men. But when he used it as a child, the statue emitted several black chakra rods that pierced Pain's back and broke off, leaving his main body immobile. It is probably assumed that this technique can only be used by possessors of the Rinnegan. It is also to note that in a way Demonic Statue of the Outer Path is a summoning jutsu, as when you make a pact with a creature you wish to summon, you most sign a scroll in your blood. This is similar to how Pain was impaled by the chakra rods when he summoned the statue, as a sort of payment for its assistance. This also may explain why Pain split his consciousness up and Rikodou didn't as Pain's main body was incapacitated, but Rikodou was able to move around freely and had no need for the technique.
It is also likely that users of the Rinnegan have a very high level of chakra, as Nagato was able to use all six of his bodies and have each of them use very powerful attacks, all using his own chakra.
These are probably just a few abilities that the Rinnegan posses's. It is the most powerful of the three ocular kekki genki and makes whoever is chosen to have it, nearly invincible. The only two users to have ever been shown to possess it are Pain and Rikodou, and they were capable of amazing feats.
