I think Kakashi's going to be alive for quite some time. Besides, he almost kicked the bucket just recently... so I doubt he'll be anywhere close to death for quite some time.

I don't think so. Because:
Mr. Kishimoto said in a news conference that 2010 would be Kakashi's year. So they can't kill him off just before he becomes the main character.
