Maybe Nickelodeon bribed the president of Cartoon Network to provide HORRIBLE shows so that the child population that watched a super loving ninja that kills everything with energy in the ball form in his hands can go watch a talking sponge that everyone in the town seems to hate except for his obese talking star-fish friend.

(Can you imagine that ^^ was one sentence...? Probably not grammatically correct but hey, I don't have to be, reality shows on a Cartoon Network? Nothing makes sense anymore.)

I'm sure there is some legal matters like a contract that'll prevent Cartoon Network from kicking the Reality shows off the air.

The issue extends online to, many sites that formerly survived on advertising are being forced to increase the number of adds, or drasticly reduce website content or add restricted content and subscription fee's. hulu is a good example of this.

I asked him if reality/live-action shows are in fact usually cheaper to make, and without even mentioning "Cartoon Network" he said "yes." Instantly he said it. I thank you for adding some logic to this thread.

And to help add more to your comment on reality shows, shows like The Othersiders and Destroy, Build, Destroy are not just cheap to make because they're live-action, but also because they're aping off of Ghost Hunters and Human Wrecking Ball. On that note, I get how American animations are more costly than reality shows, but I feel a little puzzled about anime shows. I mean does anime really cost more to make than reality shows? From the information I found, an american animated series would cost roughtly $100,000, maybe $500,000 depending on the type of show, while say an anime episode would cost roughtly $50-60,000 to make. And with the recent anime I happen to notice, it could be cheaper.

And as for the whole "online streaming sites, having reduced budgets," I get the idea of adding subscription fees to certain shows in the archive like how Crunchy Roll adds subscription fees to Naruto Shippuden, Fairy Tail, Hitman Reborn, and some of the other popular shonen shows. The idea of adding ads, not so much. How does adding more ads help with a decreasing budget?

for anime, licensing costs more than it honestly should, but its how the creator makes profit, since they dont get any or at least very little of the ad revinue produced. Not to mention the cost of just navegating their way through the tangle of companies and legalities to get the license.

for the websites, its just volume, if your not getting much from ads, ad more ads. thats basicly the logic of it, though from my own experiance with well traficked sites funded by ads, it stops being all that affective fairly quickly, though thats why as you noted sites like crunchy roll or hulu move instead to subscriptions. But a lot of smaller independant sites dont realy have the resources or content to warrant a subscription or the like so they have to rely on ad volume.

Now that you mentioned it, I remember reading one of the Hey Answerman editions on Anime News Network where there's a heavy procedure to green-lit an anime series. It was something about how whenever a director from a certain studio comes up with an idea, the studio has to confront a series of sponsors like manga/light novel publishers, media companies, toy companies, etc.

And also, I think I know what you mean in terms of independent sites not having limited options to rake in money. I kinda briefly collaborated with a few other people that called themselves "manga colors" and they made an online site where they took downloaded scanlations of popular manga like Bleach and Naruto, and would then color them on Photoshop to present on Youtube and their own site (doesn't sound legit, I know). But a little while after, they couldn't maintain the money to keep the site going(I think that was the case) and thus it had to shut down.

Would that be an example of what a small, independent site would have to struggle with?

CN stopped taking input from customers long ago. They have a vision for their network, and that is to slowly shift its focus away from cartoons.

This to me is a sad reality, but the truth.

You sound older than I thought you would be. Anyway, it's not so much that the current generation of kids don't like anime, it's just that anime itself is no longer mainstream. Anime usually attracts a niche audience. It's just that back in the 90's, anime happend to attract a bigger audience than that as if it was mainstream.

There was an edition of Hey Answerman this past friday on Anime News Network and the "answerfan" question asked, "anime is virtually nonexistent in American T.V these days. Is it due for a comeback? To add my 2 cents to the subject, I feel that it would take a while before anime can make it mainstream again. The only reason it seemed to be mainstream a decade ago is because many anime-based companies had more than enough money to spare in their pocket. Bandai, ADV, and Geneon could license anime left and right, no matter how crappy they were, 4kids could merchadise the crap out of Pokemon and Yu-gi-oh, until franchise were beaten to death, and broadcasting stations probably had the money to distribute every animated series through several hour blocks on weekend mornings, weekend evenings, and weekdays afternoons.

Nowadays, probably due to many companies runing out of money, they can't just splurge on expoliting anime the same way someone could splurge on a night at Red Lobster. Some companies even had to make drastic decisions like Geneon leaving the American market, or ADV having to separate into smaller licensing companies. Even Japan had to tighten their belts. Earlier this year, the bubble in the Japanese economy had bursted and as a result, more and more animation studios are reduced to making animes that involve harems, fanservice, moe, and popular shonen titles. It pretty much targets the Japanese otaku fanbase which are the most guaranteed consumers.

Another problem could be poor business decisions, like Cartoon Network choosing to cancel One Piece. To this day I still don't understand why One Piece was put off air, and why Bandai or Viz Media does not keep up with the times in terms of distributing dvds in half-season box sets from the get-go. The poor business decision issue is even the case with Japan. Due to the fact companies don't make enough good quality animes, we see less anime televised in America. Not enough current anime feature content that would attract the broad american audience. Instead they regard moe, harems, fanservice, and long-running shonen titles with NO MORALITY IN THE SHOWS!

Anyway, that's what I believe is the reason.

It's not that, its what Kazuki said, it just isn't as mainstream as it was back when we were growing up. Kids would like it if it were on tv a lot more. Even Pokemon isn't shown that much. I remember waking up every Saturday (?) Morning no matter what time to watch the new Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh or whatever.

To be honest, I don't watch that much tv until night but, I can't even remember the last time I saw anime on TV besides Disney XD and late night adult swim.

I really think there should be a channel dedicated to anime.

heh, anime has nevr realy been 'mainstream' I mean anime has been present in mainstream television for much longer than most relize. those in their 40's and 50's remember speed racer adn gigantor shorts, 20's and 30's sailor moon and card captors and the like on the origonal toonami, then the current group wich grew up with pokemon and the like. With each group there have been difrent responses, speed racer has consistently been top three for best moment in television and most just didn't realy conect it with anime it was just a cartoon. Then you had sailor moon wich was often just seen as one of those weird pervy japanese shows, or cardcaptors wich was quickly accepted by and associated with the gay comunity, are a lot of interesting articles about its impact on the comunity, heh or dbz wich even as a fan its more a guilty pleasure than anything else. Then with pokemon it was just pure annoyance, if you weren't a fan you hated it cause it was a pure comercial enterprise designed to sell the cards and toys and games, same with yugioh and the like. Naruto is trailing on that and often has the same rep with non fans.

Its been and will likely remain a niche market for another generation or so. though the inclusion of neilson ratings boxes into college dorms and the like should help since ratings arn't entirely based on middle income families where the parents control most of the viewing habits anymore. though their still ignoring the elderly entirely despite them being the single largest viewing audiance..

but yeah, rambling aside, the idea that anime in america would die is silly, even if you consider the last few years a mild dip(of wich I do not as its presence on many chanels and the web has grown significantly) its still a fairly consistent growth in the long term.

I have no idea how the last post I made implied that anime will eventually die. All I basically said was that anime targets a niche audience, a particular group of people, a specific set of fans with a specific taste, etc. Anime is a form of entertainment and an art form. Art does NOT die! It may evolve or change a bit over time, but it does... not... die!

As long as there are fans that subtitle anime, as long as there are fans that watch anime and read manga, as long as the Japanese and even American companies find anime profittable, and as long as there are people who want to make anime and manga, anime will continue to live until the end of time!

Not in particular, there are a great many area's you can see the influence. Say look at music, the use of english in japanese music has been growing a fair bit, you could go back as far as the introduction of the acadamy of music in yokyo in 1887 but then you'd be debating what is influence and what is just 'modernization'

Religion is another large aspect christianity has had a huge impact on nearly every aspect of the culture and can be seen in anime rather strongly in shows like neon genesis or chrono crusade.

then you'v the character archetypes so common in the various series, many are actualy a response against western influence, is why behaviours that we tend to find odd are often stressed in a shows protaganist.

Though its a hard topic to discuss on an all ages board as the issues the west has pushed the most has been cencorship and that covers areas not entirely apropriate for the board, say in the origonal gundam or the like there is breif nudity something that wouldn't fly now.

Cartoon network, scifi, and encore have all considered an all anime channel, its part of why they'v been slowly colecting licenses. Its never been deemed profitable though, its still a niche market and the licensing costs arn't generaly made up by potential profit.

Theres even been some sniffing around about using japanese comercials with subtitles as a gimick and way to potentialy expand its potential advertising market, since most products can be ordered online now, but none have found a way to make it work in the current market.

It also lost Transformers Animated, but that's not really their fault; it's mainly due to Revenge of the Fallen coming out.
