Guess i'll take a crack at it.

Seeing as how there in a forest, there are plenty things to use explosive alchemy on.
He should be able to pull of an attack more powerful than a Gillian's tanking ability.
Since he has ranged attacks i don't think that Gillian will get a chance to steal his soul or use his acidic touch, despite the speed advantage.
