I've noticed many people have this question. Here's how to do it.

Go into your User Control Panel. Click on Profile > Edit Avatar, and make sure
to click Display Gallery.

Ranks are done by post count.

Freshmen Academy Student 0-30
Ninja Academy Student 31-60
Academy Graduate 61-99
Apprentice Genin 100-250
Genin 251-400
Genin Elite 401-499
Chunin Exam Participant 500-850
Chunin 851-1190
Veteran Chunin 1191-1499
Special Jonin 1500-2999
Jonin 3000-5999
Jonin Leader 6000+

Note that at Special Jounin you can request a custom rank, and all ranks above are done manually by mods.

how do you join a villages jany one it dont matter to me

go to 'the bath house'
take 'Villages, Clans, Clubs and Families'
and you'll find some stuff of villages, for example:"Join village hidden in the Darkness" (topic)
click on it and ask to join, its easy :D

To join a village you can also PM the kage of the village, you want to join.

Though it's been said before:
1. To pick out an avatar, you must first do the following:
a) Go to the top of the page and click on the "User CP" link.
b) When that page loads, scroll down until you see a link that says
"Edit Avatar" and click on it.
c) Pick out the avatar you like best and then click the
"Save Changes" button on the bottom.
Voila! You now have an avatar which you can change at any time.

2. Your rank is just a way of showing how dedicated you are to posting on the forums. The more posts that you have, the higher your rank shall become.

This is by no means "You can't do that...." type of message as I definitely don't have the authority to do that but merely a suggestion. If you post helpful bits of information on the forums or help someone with a problem (probably goes hand in hand with helpful information), then someone may ease over and increase your Reputation. Be careful though as to not start flaming or just "spamming" random messages just to get your post count higher, because members can decrease your Reputation as well. You will come to find out that Reputation is not the best thing that exists on this website, but it certainly helps to have a little just in case.
