well, it if is a life or death situation like during the chunin exams her hair would be the last thing to worry about so I think their was no other way... that episode (called "sakura blossoms") was to point out how Sakura willingly let go of having long hair in order to prove her inner strength as well as protect her team mates. Way back then, her hair was something really important to her, and since she cut it off I'm guessing because she had realized how much she felt she needed to focus more on her skills and dedication to being a ninja more than she would rather have long hair...

*Also, I remember in the early shipuuden episodes there was a flashback of Sakura training under Tsunade between the time skip, and she had her long hair again... she cut it off again though? hmmm... I guess she decided to keep it short.

This one says it all. Besides, I guess it kind of reminds her that having that hair cut made her a better ninja. Now, when it comes to looks, short hair is more suitable for her.

I used to have long hair, and through certain circumstances it HAD to be cut, it mades me feel... almost like I was in a slightly differnet body, as if I had had some type of cosmetic surgery. Taking care of long hair is a LOT of work, so when you cut it off, you feel the change very much.

Cutting long hair always has a greatly symbolic meaning, from a need for a change in the way you view yourself to a lesser form of masochism.

For Sakura, the act of cutting hair was a defining moment where she finally decided to take being a ninja seriously, no longer clinging to shallow images.
