I know the history, and yeah, it sucks. The holiday's not supposed to be about the story of Thanksgiving, though, so much as the idea of Thanksgiving. It's supposed to be about giving thanks for what we have in our lives. The story of Thanksgiving is just the first example of this in America, though you're right about it being associated with the Native Americans and their "helping" the English settlers.
