View Full Version : Use of acceptable Swearing in the Manga

So I miss the intensity of the dialogue that was in the Naruto Manga when in the early days of its translating. Not only was the dialogue smart and serious, but the fact that there were actually peppered swear words here and there to insinuate emotion, intensity, and simply the maturity of it being a teen+ manga was very important to me. Unfortunately, it seems that there were some petty legal attacks on Viz shortly after these volumes for this light language and since then has had to be dumbed down to words as distractingly stupid as "darn" and "rats", even being used in life-and-death situations. It's very disheartening to me, and I wonder if any of the other fans feel the same way.
My questions are as follows. Is it true that Viz, even in the later Shippuden volumes, has censored all forms of cursewords outright? Also, I have heard rumors of Viz eventually releasing versions of the manga that are unedited. Any word on this as well?

I am not from viz but would like to point out that japanese has few swear words. They aren't actually swears but phases closer to "I cant beleive it" which can be translated as "damn" or the fbomb. There is an aggressive way to way "you" which could be translated any number of ways as "you *****" pick your poison.
Adapting a manga for the local audience can be difficult. I agree realistic dialogue is important in translation, but the japanese did not have to worry about swear words when marketing this to the 13 to 17 year old japanese crowd but is a problem viz has to face in america.
Also remember some networks (like CN) or some book companies will not show/stock anime/manga rated above a certain age limit. Viz has to consider whether these people will sign on and show/sell the product. This is why uncut DVD's and manga are sometimes made, thus making it more available for people.
I differ to the real mods to answer your question but wanted to bring in some perspective.

I have nothing to say but...
Where did the Sai I came to know and love go? "Are you a boy or girl?" does not measure up to the extreme win that was his original character in the online translations. I'm all for an uncensored distribution of the manga. So, they can show violence and blood, yet not swear words? I'd rather have my kids reading curses they already know than seeing all that gore. And Pein has some pretty warped views on his idea of peace--don't you think that's going to make kids start questioning that?
I'm sorry, but most 12-15 year-olds already know the F-bomb and d!ck.

Exactly, I was 8 years old when I started using swear words such as damn. When I started using the fbomb I was in 7th grade, or 13 years old. People should realize by now that most of the youth today is forced to mature faster than in the past because of the current situation of the world.

When swearing becomes a part of someones language, as in they do not excessively use it, then they have matured because of the fact they use it in a responsible way IMO.
Now to stay on topic.
I recently bought the first 3 Uncut Box sets of the anime, and they say damn and jackass in the first 2 sets, I haven't watched the third one yet. So what is the difference in selling this in stores with swearing and selling manga in stores with swearing? Also, I don't understand why some people say that some book stores won't sell books rated over a certain age-group being the reason. I mean the Harry Potter books are sold in basically any book store that I can think of and they contain swearing, death, etc.

Just because they're not mature doesn't mean they can learn what they already know. I started swearing around my house when I was in third grade--my mom brought me up well.

What people seem to forget is that, sure, teenagers cuss, but originally, they didn't/shouldn't. Naruto, Bleach and other mangas no longer cuss because of the underlying fact that they are trying to set an example for the crowd. As if killing people you don't like makes it any better... But still, swearing is one less concept teenagers face among drugs, alcohol, sexual intercourse, violence, and suicide. If you take it away, it might make a small difference in a corrupt world.

I completely agree. I was just thinking about this the other day as I went back and read the earlier volumes.
I mean ..., I'd kill for a "crap" here and there now. It adds a sense of realism to the series. In all actuality, someone in a life or death series isn't going to yell "Rats!" And it also gives the manga that edgy, mature feel and helps set the mood in battles.

As I said before swearing does not make you more mature. While I think that this is a good Idea, American kids these days are not mature.

I agree we need some words like crap and some of the lesser swear words, but there is no reason to hear Fbombs and the GD word left and right every few sentences like I hear in school. Swearing does not make you more mature when you constantly do it, only more annoying.

Any word can be a "curse" word. It's just a word. Blood and gore are far worse than mere words.

The translations I read has large use of the *F* word. A LOT. They say other swear words too.

I agree that viz should put some curse words in the manga as long as they are used in a normal way. One thing i didnt like very much was that in the subbed episode on this website when naruto and sai were at the hot springs it replaced d!ck with equipmesnt which took a lot of comedy out of the volume. Also in volume 38 i believe viz and shonen jump shadowed out konohamaru's jutsu with the two girls and the one of sasuke and sai which i also thought took away some of the classic comedy of the naruto seireis.
The 12 and older crowd want to see more swearing, therfore it will show a lot of
emotion. There are 7 and 8 year olds who watch the show, but most of them heard
swear words before. Most teens usually read the manga, so why not put swearing in it.

What makes even less sense is that normally, teens swear more than kids do. And I want Hidan to swear! And Sai to question Naruto's "Manhood"! And the SasuSai scene! At least they kept the Suigetsu/Sasuke scene in, heh heh heh...

Just because somebody over the age of 18 does it doesn't mean it's mature. Besides that, I don't think swearing and knowing a ton of dirty things makes kids any more mature, it just makes us kinda twisted. `o.o"
Honestly though, to swear or not swear is a choice.
