I have been a part of thousands of gaming, anime, sports, music etc etc Forums and they all allowed their users to use "Custom" avatars and signatures, which is using your very own personalized avatar or signature from either the internet from websites like photobucket or uploading one from your computer. Why aren't we allowed to do that, just wondering.

Because we're the official site, we have certain agreements we've made that won't allow for things like that.

Mainly, user images for avatars and signatures would primarily be either fanart or porn, the former being something we unfortunately can't allow, and the latter being inappropriate for obvious reasons. We couldn't keep up checking something like that right now, and wouldn't be able to offer you guys a forum if we let you do it.

Technically, it's often illegal for those other sites and their users to allow what they do in regards to banner sigs and avatars, but it's not the kind of thing anyone thinks is worth suing over; 13 year-olds don't have enough to warrant the legal effort, and they're usually your best customers otherwise. Viz would certainly run into problems with that, however, since we're about as big of a name in this industry as you can get.

So like if I take random picture out of the internet of a naruto character, and put it into photoshop. Then I change the image, add stuff and personalize it to use it. That's illegal  ?

It technically can be, though maybe not for you. There aren't any international laws, so I'm talking about this as if you're in the US.

If you didn't make any money off of the derivative art you made regarding a copyrighted series, nor did you claim copyright on the series, then you'd be in the clear.

The people that owned the forum would be the ones in trouble for allowing it, if they profited on the forum in any way, shape or form, if the forum contributed substantially to their userbase or livelyhood, or if the user content contributed to any defamation towards the copyright holders happening on the forum itself.

Oh I see, and I do live in the U.S.
I understand now, since you guys aren't a non-profit organization you can't allow fanart.
Thanks for the info, I didn't know that.

No problem.

Law doesn't work like alot of people think it does. I'm sure I've helped alot of people understand our situation better in my responses to you.

If you honestly wanted to help change it, and you live in the US, just write your congressman about why you think copyright laws need to be updated to allow this kind of stuff for forum use. Most copyright laws were written to address photocopying, and it's been a shaky century we've had as of late in the way we've been evolving them.

They take that stuff seriously, though they might not personally understand why you think it'd be in our best interests as a nation to allow it as well as you do.

Really, no joke.

the law is an important thing and sometimes it makes most people angry. But whoever made up laws are meant to be broken only applies in a dictatorship that is tormeanting a country. In a society like the U.S. the laws are meant to protect people.(except economists who spend tax payer's money to do stupid things like to spend $1,000,000 on a school subject that wasabout how a fruit fly mates. I didn't like to here that at all and i thought it was a waste of time, talant, and especially money!)
