In my opinion I do not think everyone should be viewed as having to have a single companion/mate. I think Gaara is already with who he should be with: all of the Sand people. After all of Gaara's previous isolation and scorn he has found someone who he loves and who loves him back, the Sand Village itself. I see Matsuri as being just the icebreaker who was one of the first who saw through Gaara's stony demeanor to his love of the Sand Village and who reciprocated this love back instead of fearing him. If anything I see her as a loyal pupil, not a lovemate.

Honestly, I don't think any of the original naruto character would be amazing for our Gaara.

By process of elimination, it seems that Tenten would almost be the right pick. I think its totally random and trust me, I'm a total NejiTen supporter, but none of the other girls would be good for him and I just can't see Gaara being gay...

In my opinion, Gaara shouldn't be with anyone. Or couldn't. I don't think anyone in the series is compatible with Gaara. He's fine the way he is. It's hard to tell anyway. There's little evidence of development between him and any other girl, even Matsuri.
