Well he already lost to Itachi's eyes. Probably would happen with an upgraded set.

The smartest is either Tobi or oro. At least Oro was smart enough to leave akatsuki. Maybe learned the true plan.

Orochimaru just took his human experimentation too far in search of knowledge of new jutsus. And so he got ran out of town and became a missing nin. He couldn't get Itachi to use as his pawn, so he went after Sasuke and took full advantage of Sasuke and his want for revenge against his brother Itachi. Although I sometimes wonder if Orochimaru could have possibly known about what the village elders were planning with the Uchiha clan?
