During the 1st Shinobi World War, Hashirama met Madar uchiha at a river where the young Uchiha was skipping stones. Telling his new acquaintance that he needed to put more feeling into his attempts, Hashirama introduced himself to the young man as his rival in skipping stones and noted that at this point in time, he was leading. Though their clans have been in a bloody feud for ages, hired by opposing factions to counterbalance the other,both Hashirama and Madara knew the only way for either to survive, was to become friends rather than enemies. Soon after, while attending the burial of their brother Kawarma alongside his younger brothers, Hashirama got into an altercation with their dad over what he considered to be the pointless death of Kawarama. That moment convinced Hashirama, with Tobirama's support, that there must be peace amongst ninja. He would later discuss this concept with Madara when he met him on the riverbank once again after the death of Itama.The two would continue to meet like this to train and discuss prospects of the future. It was on one of these occasions that Hashirama shared his dream to create a new village in the very spot where they stood which would serve as a safe place for people to live and children to grow up to become strong shinobi. A place where shinobi would be assigned missions based on their skill set and not simply out of necessity for forces on a battlefield. Butsuma would later discover that Hashirama was meeting with Madara, having sent Tobirama to trail his elder brother. Telling Hashirama that Madara was an Uchiha who had killed several of the Senju's strongest members, he ordered his son to use the meetings to spy on Madara and if needs be, to kill him. However when the two boys met again, they warned each other that a trap had been set for the other, and as they fled, they looked back in shock as their fathers and younger brothers prepared, fully ready to combat each other

During the first wars, he and the Senju clan rose to being regarded as one of the two most powerful clans in the world, rivalling the Uchiha clan (http://naruto.viz.com/wiki/Uchiha_clan). Because of this, the Senju constantly fought the Uchiha clan (http://naruto.viz.com/wiki/Uchiha_clan), and he himself against Madara Uchiha (http://naruto.viz.com/wiki/Madara_Uchiha) personally, even to the point that, when someone hired the Senju clan, the opposing side would hire the Uchiha clan, and vice-versa. Eventually growing tired of the constant fighting, Hashirama and his clan approached the Uchiha and offered a truce with them. Even to the Uchiha the Senju were most powerful. Little by little some of the Uchiha clan members defected and surrendered to the Senju. Once Madara was defeated and laid down Hashirama begged for him to give up and result in peace. Madara would concede ONLY if Hashirama would kill himself or his brother. Without a second of hesitation Hashirama willingly gave up his life and took a kunai and attempted to stab himself for peace. Luckily, Madara stopped him from landing the suicidal blow on himself. Hashirama proved himself to Madara and from there peace was formed. Allied with Madara and his clan, the two groups started what grew into the Five Great Shinobi Nations by founding Konohagakure.
Life and Times of Hashirama Senju
When deciding who should become the leader of Konoha, the villagers selected Hashirama over Madara for the title of First Hokage. Hashirama wanted Madara to be Hokage yet Tobirama intervened stating that most people preferred Hashirama and that he could not deiced who should be hokage by himself and that there should be democracy. Fearing that Senju would oppress the Uchiha, Madara left the village, and challenged Hashirama's rule. Later after Madara left he challenged Hashirama to a battle. Hashirama was forced to accept to protect the village. Hashirama single-handily battled Madara who was also controlling Kurama. The battle lasted for an entire day and ultimately Hashirama was the winner by tricking Madara with a wood clone as a distraction so that Hashirama could kill Madara by surprise. In the aftermath of their battle, Madara was believed to have been killed, and the Valley of the End was created. To commemorate the battle, two statues, of Madara and Hashirama, were carved into the earth surrounding the valley.
At some point, Hashirama gained control of several tailed beasts (http://naruto.viz.com/wiki/Tailed_beasts), which he would later spread out between the warring nations as peace offerings, and to help equalize the powers between the nations. While he was Hokage, Hashirama defeated Kakuzu, who received orders from Takigakure to kill him. However, the war still waged on, and, thinking about the future of Konoha, he and his younger brother, Tobirama Senju, the future Second Hokage, trained the young Hiruzen Sarutobi, the future Third Hokage. At some time, he also came into possession of a scroll filled with kinjutsu (http://naruto.viz.com/wiki/Kinjutsu), and sealed it away. Not long after founding Konoha, Hashirama died in battle, passing on the title of Hokage to Tobirama.
After Death
Sometime after Hashirama's death, Orochimaru experimented with Hashirama's DNA. Desiring Hashirama's unique abilities, Orochimaru exhumed the Hokage's body and infused sixty infant test subjects with his DNA, hoping that one would prove able to use Wood Release. Only Yamato survived the process. Danzō Shimura's right arm has also been infused with Hashirama's DNA through a similar experiment with Orochimaru, in the hopes of controlling the powers of the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox, as well as to increase his physical energy to maintain the ten Sharingan embedded on his right arm. Somehow Madara Uchiha also got hold of Hashirama's cells. With it he used them to create lower level beings called White Zetsu. Madara made a bunch of different kinds of White Zetsu which were from Hashirama's cells. With the experiement Uchiha Madara was also able to save the life of Obito Uchiha. Near death and half of his body destroyed Madara used the Zetsu and Hashirama' DNA to create and heal part of Obito's body.Madara also used the cells of Hashirama to give him the Rinnegan, Wood style, and great stamina.

But the most positive aspect of the legacy that Hashirama left behind is an ideal known as the Will of Fire a belief held by most residents of Konohagakure. Through sharing Madara's disdain for him, Obito — while under the guise of Madara — admitted that he has a begrudging respect and admiration for Hashirama and saw Naruto as the heir to Hashirama's ideology

Kabuto claimed that Hashirama's might was so vast, that there aren't any living shinobi in the current era that could match his level of power. It was such that many considered his prowess to be a mere fairy tale much like the existence of the Sage of Six Paths
Hashirama is reputed as the most powerful shinobi of his era, his might being so vast that it earned him the title of "God of Shinobi",and having been called the strongest shinobi even by his enemy Madara Uchiha (http://naruto.wikia.com/wiki/Madara_Uchiha) who, on countless occasion admitted his inferiority to the legend.
Madara mentioned that fighting all five current Kage was trivial compared to his battle with Hashirama, and that with only one of them alive, the landscape would not change as drastically
Sage Mode
Hashirama's chakra reserves was so powerful and grand that he was able to use Senjutsu. A feat not many can do without large chakra such as Naruto and Jiryria. When in Sage Mode he gains markings around and under his eyes as well as one in the middle of his forehead reminiscent of a third eye. This was a sign that even though Hashiram had Senjutsu he was still imperfect at it. Hashirama needed to stay still and keep his hands together to get and stay into Sage Mode.
Medical Ninjutsu
Hashirama was also able to use medical ninjutsu without forming seals, that surpassed anyone's. Madara surmised that his medical techniques were also on an entirely different level than Tsuande's
