two of histories most inept and passive leaders who's antics and in action caused some of the bloodiest chapters of modern history.

1, bigger fence straddler

2, worse overall leader

3, bigger indirect body count

4, who's legacy is most likely to be redeemed?

The Civil War was not completely Buchanan's fault. There was the Congress and just the plain obdurance of the South in general after Lincoln was elected.

Whereas, Chamberlain let Hitler do whatever he liked including letting Germany reclaim the Sudetentland, which was supose to be a firewall to prevent German agression, without a peep. Of course, everyone else was a neglinet, but Englad had the most power to stop it.

In the end, Chamberlain will always be remembered, but Buchanan will fade into the mists of obscurity.

you have a valid point about that but I doubt Jimmy will fade away he's an example of what not to do in office every leader should look at and learn from much like Chamberlain

Maybe for another 100 years, but a thousand? People remember only a few from that long ago. Caesar, Cleopatra, Atilla the Hon. You have to be big, both spectacular and horrendous, for that.

There is no way Buchanan will be ever remembered worse in terms of common history than this.

Power of words indeed.

Good point, to really be remembered you need a good catch phrase. What does Buchanan have?

Chamberlain is iconic

Peace in our time. `:P

When Buchanan decided to be somewhat more firm with in his federal power it was during his lame duck months.
