After his father's death, Kakashi was a stern and somewhat stubborn character. He adopted the 'way of the ninja' passed the point where it was not just devotion, but naivety. His father was shunned from his actions of deviating on ninja missions, enough to make him depressed and thus, taking his life.

After the Obito / Rin saga, this allowed Kakashi to adopt a caring attitude in his personality, with him accepting that the 'ninja way' is not exactly completely legit. He learned the hard way about what it means to be a true ninja and therefore, his personality changed, for the better.

His devotion to now protect loved ones and what matters in life is remarkable. He never passed any genin if he saw no teamwork between them, as his past experience with Obito has taught him that this is necessary for any ninja.

In his ANBU days ( maybe not even), Kakashi would definitely be aware of Orochimaru's distressing life motives.

Considering this altering personality shift from stern to caring at the age of 13, the next turmoil he experienced in life (par the war in which he did not participate) was when Sasuke left Konoha. He was one of three of his first ever students, and he abandoned the idea of friendship and left the village that cared so much for him.

Kakashi felt it was his mistake and his priority / life goal to take responsibility for allowing this to happen. So much that this impact of Sasuke's betrayal, caused Kakashi to awaken his MS. He was betrayed by someone he finally let into his life, and that was ultimately squashed.

For Sasuke to go to someone like Orochimaru, hurt Kakashi, enough for him to feel the same as say... when an Uchiha kills their best friend or goes through a massive traumatic experience.

So the reason for Kakashi to have the MS now, is directly related to Sasuke.

Eh, just a fleeting idea that I thought to share as a possibility. Vivi made a valid argument about a possible Hanare incident during the time skip, though it would make sense if it was more related - like Sasuke - causing this.

So, apparently, the MS isn't killing your best friend in a since, but feeling the emotions... Huh, interesting theory, this deserves a rep.

Cheers mate - there's a few theories, just thought to expand on possibilities. I wonder if we'll ever know....

Not sure if Itachi said he killed Shisui, but he definitely stated he covered it up and stole his eye, following the wishes of his friend.

Adding that to this theory, could be possible that the sharingan evolves through intense negative emotional expansion, especially since the Susano, Genjutsu and Amy look relatively dark in all aspects.

Itachi told Sasuke he had to kill his best friend. But I think this is Not because it's required to activate his MS, but because the intense emotional strain on his soul from losing his best friend would unleash more power. Watching his best friend die is probably just as bad. So I would say it's possible you don't personally have to kill them.

And Kakashi said he lost many friends to war.

Tobi commented in the manga as well by saying the Uchiha are historically fueled by hatred. Which probably causes the dark side of Sharingan to come out, MS.

Yeah that's it. Intense negative emotional distress..... well put. I think if any Uchiha went through similar experience to Sasuke / Itachi, they would/could awaken the MS. Madara, Izuna and Kakashi's are still open for explanation, though we can provide possible reasons for Kakashi.

Madara and Izuna apparently got it by simply training super hard. Maybe they had to do it to protect their clan... enough stress to bring this out in them maybe.

Ya. Seems like all the guilt and trouble let Kakashi acquire the MS. Loss of his dear friends, and his student going on the wrong path....he is shouldering quite a lot of burders...I feel really bad for him...Kakashi senpai!!! Teamwork!!!

This is actually a very logical theory!

It's not about killing, it was never about killing your best friend or brother. It's only something that would completely crush your heart, make you feel hatred in every part of your body, Uchiha was a clan of hatred, then even the MS is something connected to hatred, that's what I believe, or maybe not hatred, but PAIN and SADNESS, yeah that's even more interesting, cause when you kill your brother or best friend you feel PAIN or SADNESS, like Sasuke did, he cried even though he killed him. To get MS = Feel PAIN, feel SADNESS, something similar to these two
