After his father's death, Kakashi was a stern and somewhat stubborn character. He adopted the 'way of the ninja' passed the point where it was not just devotion, but naivety. His father was shunned from his actions of deviating on ninja missions, enough to make him depressed and thus, taking his life.
After the Obito / Rin saga, this allowed Kakashi to adopt a caring attitude in his personality, with him accepting that the 'ninja way' is not exactly completely legit. He learned the hard way about what it means to be a true ninja and therefore, his personality changed, for the better.
His devotion to now protect loved ones and what matters in life is remarkable. He never passed any genin if he saw no teamwork between them, as his past experience with Obito has taught him that this is necessary for any ninja.
In his ANBU days ( maybe not even), Kakashi would definitely be aware of Orochimaru's distressing life motives.
Considering this altering personality shift from stern to caring at the age of 13, the next turmoil he experienced in life (par the war in which he did not participate) was when Sasuke left Konoha. He was one of three of his first ever students, and he abandoned the idea of friendship and left the village that cared so much for him.
Kakashi felt it was his mistake and his priority / life goal to take responsibility for allowing this to happen. So much that this impact of Sasuke's betrayal, caused Kakashi to awaken his MS. He was betrayed by someone he finally let into his life, and that was ultimately squashed.
For Sasuke to go to someone like Orochimaru, hurt Kakashi, enough for him to feel the same as say... when an Uchiha kills their best friend or goes through a massive traumatic experience.
So the reason for Kakashi to have the MS now, is directly related to Sasuke.
Eh, just a fleeting idea that I thought to share as a possibility. Vivi made a valid argument about a possible Hanare incident during the time skip, though it would make sense if it was more related - like Sasuke - causing this.
Regards
