Where to start, alright well I've been pretty vague about this entire game. The truth is I'm testing out alot of variables, and in order to test them properly there are alot of aspects I can't explain to you or go into detail about, so please just bare with me. (oh and if I cause you to rip out any hair take a pic so I can add it to my scrap book?)

There are few keys things I want to stress before we get into character creation (which will be in the next post) and a couple of tips that I'll tell you know (and really hope you forget later.)

YOU HAVE A GOAL AND THERE IS AN END-This isn't going to turn into a verse, this is more like a one shot... more like a 6 shot... however many shots it takes, whatever, the point is this game does have an ending, and theoretically you could "win" I guess.

YOU HAVE LITTLE CONTROL, DON'T FIGHT IT
Like I said before, I'm testing things, in order to test them I might have to flat out veto your character, or change your history, or push you towards a certain path, etc. The mechanics of the game are also more restricting then the stuff usually presented on the forum. Almost every action you take will involve a dice roll. There are just more rules all around. Sorry Eh, Suck it up and deal :lol:

YOU CAN DIE
Yes, you CAN die in the game, you can also kill other players. Does this mean you should run around trying to off everyone else? Not necessarily, in fact that might be a suicide run, but if you want to, go for it. Once the game starts I won't try to deter you from stupid choices, but i'm not gonna save your ass if you commit to stupid choices. :D
With that said, we're going to move onto character creation and the rule system itself.

Character Creation Explaination, catchy huh?

Ok, so here's the deal, we're going to be using altered World of Darkness Rules. If you've never played a WoD game before, I assure you, it's actually pretty easy.

This is what a normal WoD Character sheet looks like:

Your character sheet will more or less fallow that, with a few slight changes. First off I'm going to be dropping some of the skills or replacing them with something else. But we'll get to all of that later. Right now you need to understand what all of those words mean.

Alright, we're going to start with Attributes. You'll notice on the sheet they're split up into 3 major categories. (Mental, Physical, and Social) On the far left side you'll see there are also 3 rows (Power, Finesse, and Resistance) this will help you to understand how each attribute is used in game and what type of action it covers.


Attributes:
Intelligence- This is pretty straight forward. It's your base intelligence, your ability to grasp ideas, concepts, your book smarts.

Wits- Wits is your ability to think on your feet

Resolve- Is your ability to stick with it, it's your mental shield in a way.

Strength- This one's simple, it's your strength. Done.

Dext- Again simple, if you want more detail request it.

Stamina- Simple, if you want more detail request it.

Presence- This one can be tricky. This has to deal with your physical appearance, HOWEVER, this is not strictly being attractive vs uggo. This is the way you carry yourself. Someone with high presence commands attention when they enter a room, politicians have it, models have, leaders have.

Manipulation- This is straight forward, details upon request.


Composure- This is your ability to stay composed (no really) it's your ability to resist coercion from others as well as keeping your cool in social situations.
Moving on to skills, you'll notice that skills are also split into three categories, again Mental, Physical, and Social. Skills differ from Attributes in being more refined. These are specific tasks that you learn that apply to specific areas vs broader based ones like attributes. Any action you take with almost always consist of a skill + an attribute.

Skills:

Academics- This is straight forward, it's your skill in academics, whether you're a college student pursuing higher education, or simply a self taught book worm academics is for you.

Computer- Straight forward, details upon request. *I might throw this one out.

Crafts- Crafts is the skill of working with your hands and can cover a wide variety of things, from mechanics, to carpentry, to pottery, etc.

Investigation-

Medicine- Is medicine. Done.

Occult- This is getting thrown out, or at the very least replaced with another term, probably lore, either way I'll explain it better if I choose to use it.

Politics- This is literally about politics and current events. I never use this stat in game, i'll probably ditch it.

Science- Science is science, your ability to understand basic laws of physics, to biology, to rocket science. Don't underrate it, it often comes in handy.

Athletics- Important skill to have. It's your athletic ability, it covers alot of physical actions, like running. Believe me... you'll want to be able to run... probably fast.

Brawl- This is hand to hand combat, fisticuffs.

Firearms- I might toss this since you'll have superpowers and no one seemed interested in going the gunner route, but I might keep it for NPCs. This is literally your ability to fire a gun.

Larceny- Is the skill of stealing. It's rather broad though, it covers picking pockets/locks, GTA, etc.

Stealth- You all know what stealth is.

Survival- This is specifically your ability to survive IN THE WILD, things like foraging for food, knowing which plants are bad, camping sh*t. etc.

Weaponry- This is the skill of using hand held weapons, melee basically. It can be anything from a 2 handed hammer, to a broken beer bottle.

Animal Ken- Is the skill of understanding animals. It's about knowledge as well as your natural talent in dealing with animals.

Empathy- Is your ability to relate to other people and understand their emotions.

Expression- The skill of expressing yourself, whether it's verbal, written, or some other artistic form, this skill reflects your ability to express your thoughts and ideas to others.

Intimidation- Details upon request.

Persuasion- Details upon request.

Socialize- More or less this is your ability to socialize with other people, having a general conversation, etc. etc.

Streetwise- Similar to survival, but in an urban setting.

Subterfuge- One of Kuno's favs. This is the art of deception and telling lies.

You'll get points to spend, that's actually the next step.

Umm, alright, if you look at that character sheet again you'll notice that all of your attributes have one dot blacked in to start with, that counts as dot. You start with it because is shows that you are not... well retarded basically.

Now, you see how those attributes are split into the three cats? (Mental, Physical, Social?) you're going to pick on cat as your primary, then one as your secondary and so on.

In otherwords, say i want to be a wicked smart, but socially awkard scientist, I'd probably choose the mental atts as my primary, then physical, then social.


In your Primary you get 5 dots to spend.
Second is 4 dots
Third is 3 dots.

Two dots in any attribute is considered human average.

Mmm sort of, manipulation is just flat out your ability to manipulate people, if you were to seduce someone you would probably roll something like manipulation and persuasion.

Likewise, you could have high presence without being super charismatic, you might just be a really large imposing person. It's sort of like... anyone that walks into a room and your eyes turn to them. Whether it's out of fear, respect, admiration, etc.

For example:

The firearms, thought about tossing, thought better, truth is even if i had superpowers I'd still carry a gun, total Dresden style. Sometime guns come in handy, if you want one, keep that in mind ya?

I'm just gonna ramble for a second:

So i've got 3 major builds, I ended up splitting the psi-powers to be geared more towards social atts/skills, the magis are probably going to fall into mental build which leaves the others who are probably geared towards physical.

Now the first two, easy-peasy, it's just a matter of figuring out the power trees and giving them a cost or value system. Stuff's pretty straight forward and it's pretty easy to tell if you've got an ability that's way over powered or one that's too weak.

The third set, the physical ones, that's the wall I'm trying to climb. The problem is they're constants. With the first two I can treat them like straight merits, you spend WP or Ess or whatever, that keeps the players from spamming charms or whatever, but the physical stuff.... Things like super strength, super speed, etc. those are all abilities that should remain constant with your player you don't have an essance pool for lifting or throwing.


There's like two ways I can think of to balance this out but I don't really like either, I can put them in as constants but put them in as almost weaker abilites (IE no perfect defense or anything like that) or I could just drop Dev and Lone from the game altogher, but that flaws the test itself.

Hmmm... I don't like it. Maybe giving them more stamina rolls? But again that should really be considered a constant part of their character... and likewise if they build their characters without being nobs they'd have high stamina anyway?

Right, on that second part I think you sorta see the problem.

Here's what I'm basically saying (let's use you as the example)

So you use telepathic abilites right? Well you're going to have a standard character sheet (like the one in the OP) that represents you at all times, reagardless of whether or not you're using any super powers. Then you're going to have Merits (we haven't gotten to Merits yet, but they're basically special abilities you can purchase to help in certain situations, for example there's one called iron lungs, means you can hold your breath longer etc.) Under your Merits is where your powers are actually going to go.

So for you, let's say you have the Merit: Mind Read, well in order to use your merit there's usually a catch, some kind of cost that you have to pay. For you it would be called Focus. Let's pretend your Focus pool is 30 and the cost of Reading someone's mind is 5 Focus.

So say you're in a situation where reading someone's mind can help you, so you pay the 5 Focus to attempt to read that persons mind, etc. etc.


The problem I have with the physical stuff is that most of the things are already represented on the sheet by attributes and skills. Like if Dev wants super strenght, his Strength att should just be 6 or 7, it's physically part of his body. Now I could do stamina rolls everytime he preforms some kind of strength feat, but the fact is if he's a physical based guy, he should have wicked high stamina to start, so a stamina roll is like... nothing, easily passable... And not only that but your power base and the magi's have more variety. The point cost makes sense because you have such a wide selection of what you could preform, it all falls under the same basic idea, but they're different in many ways.

Dev's is more one sided. Superstrong. That's it. Done. But he can do ALOT of stuff with that.

Well that's like in videogames where characters are superstrong, but they don't always punch with super strength, right? Like you could have merits of like, thick skin that makes them feel less pain/take less damage, lift lets them lift heavy ass things, super jump lets them jump much higher than a normal person and let them land without harm, etc, couldn't you?

Like for someone like a telepath, their power is constant too in that, for most telepaths, they learn things REALLY easily. It doesn't mean that they're using a power though. Maybe you could do something like that? Idk, I'm probably not helping.

I'm about half done with Red and Maik, further with Red then Maik, but Maik's been working on something else and he tends to catch up quick.

Dev and Lone are at zero progress, not really their fault, i'm just having the most trouble sorting out their powers without hella stacking them. The balance is off is all.

I'm just gonna ramble for a second:

So i've got 3 major builds, I ended up splitting the psi-powers to be geared more towards social atts/skills, the magis are probably going to fall into mental build which leaves the others who are probably geared towards physical.

Now the first two, easy-peasy, it's just a matter of figuring out the power trees and giving them a cost or value system. Stuff's pretty straight forward and it's pretty easy to tell if you've got an ability that's way over powered or one that's too weak.

The third set, the physical ones, that's the wall I'm trying to climb. The problem is they're constants. With the first two I can treat them like straight merits, you spend WP or Ess or whatever, that keeps the players from spamming charms or whatever, but the physical stuff.... Things like super strength, super speed, etc. those are all abilities that should remain constant with your player you don't have an essance pool for lifting or throwing.


There's like two ways I can think of to balance this out but I don't really like either, I can put them in as constants but put them in as almost weaker abilites (IE no perfect defense or anything like that) or I could just drop Dev and Lone from the game altogher, but that flaws the test itself.

Hmmm... I don't like it. Maybe giving them more stamina rolls? But again that should really be considered a constant part of their character... and likewise if they build their characters without being nobs they'd have high stamina anyway?
