Against or for saying it? Or neutral? Why?

Well, the word 'gay' has kinda lost its meaning. Most people use it when they mean something is stupid or retarded now.<.<

So, I really don't care if people say it. (Then again, I'm not gay, so I can't really say if I would be offended if people said that around me)

Don't care. I've all but stopped using it myself simply because I felt like it. I do not sympathize with gay people that get offended by its use though. It's a word, if you're going to let that bother you perhaps you should stay inside, as the real world is a far more brutal place than you're ready for.

eh kind of neutral. i think it will slowly fall out of use and we will look back upon it like generations of old with their "far out" "groovy" and "swell"

I honestly don't get why saying something is gay is offensive the word gay has had multiple meanings over the years and is not just a word describing people who like the same sex. If someone use it as a word to describe someone who is being stupid or retarded it's their right to do so, gay meant happy before.

Words are only as wounding as you make them.

Words are words. There is nothing intrinsically bad about them. The only thing is the meaning. When you say, "That's so gay,"are you referring to homosexuals individuals? Of course not, that's ludicrous. So why should they be offended? At best, it's a homophone. Now, of course, if the meaning is to be degrading to these individuals, then yeah, be offended. But words are just words, and I hate people who try to say a word is "offensive". Words cannot be offensive. Only people and meaning can be offensive.

I say the following instead: "That is super effin weak dude".
Or That's so ridiculous.

I refrain from using the OP term mainly because my mom is gay, and she takes offense to it. I myself don't really care about it, but I do respect it if gay people are offended by it.

i'm bi, i don't take offence. but i do see how some can be offended. do you know how it got the meaning "stupid"? because of people who're homosexual. i don't use it and i don't really like people using it. just like retarded. it has the same meaning as gay if you use it as slang. i understand that it could be morphed differently, but retard also had a different meaning before it defined someone with a mental disability. from that perspective, i see it only proper to not offend those who are and/or have loved ones who're gay.

I am more so annoyed by the phrase's tendency of being overused nowadays. <____>

For that reason, along with the possibility that it may cause offence, as well as the fact that the adjective 'gay' possesses meanings apart from homosexuality or stupidity, I am personally against using that phrase.

I use it. I wouldn't say I'm for it though, because I don't feel it's something you need to be for or against.
When I use said phrase I never mean it in a derogatory way towards gays and/or lesbians. I believe that when gay is used in this context it doesn't necessarily have a stereotypical implication attached to it. Like many other words [like cool, hot, etc.] it has unintentionally developed several slang uses and several other meanings.
When I use said phrase I use it to express how lame or weird something is. I don't mean to liken gays to something lame or weird, but like I said, the word gay has multiple meanings nowadays.
Gay also means happy, but should I not call someone who is very happy gay? People in the past did it all the time. Just because ONE meaning of the word gay is controversial doesn't mean that every time we say it it becomes offensive.
In summary, I think it's totally okay to use the phrase "that's so gay" as long as it is in a context that is not insulting towards gays and as long as it doesn't hurt someone.
Anyone, gay or not, who takes offense to something like this, in my opinion is over analyzing the phrase, being oversensitive and/or just wanting something to use against the user of the phrase.

[Of course if it is used to insult or hurt someone then THAT context and use of the word becomes a no-no in my book, but not the phrase or word itself.]

I dont really care at all, since i say it alot. I don't mean to be offensive. If a person has a sense of humor i don't think it would be all that bad. The only time it's really bad is when you actually mean it when you call someone gay in a really bad way and know that thhey are. I feel the same way about the word "fa-g"/fa-ggot.

I know some gay people, and they do get offended when use the word gay as in stupid. So for that reason I dont say gay in that meaning. Plus I find it as a very Jr. highish insult.

I just don't care. I wouldn't really care at all unless you specifically attack a person with the use of the word gay. I mean, the commercials are stupid. It's not like people are running around going "That's so {Insert your name here}" And if they are then they sound like total idiots.

I don't say it. I don't think anyone should say it.

You may say it is just a word and no one should take offense to it. But, like sasu_girl said, the reason it is used in the place of stupid is because of its meaning of people who like the same sex. So, instead of calling something stupid, you are saying "That's so people who like the same sex!" Which is perfectly understandable why people would take offense to it.
Also, It may not be that bad of an insult. But, when it is a commonly used phrase to call people like you stupid...I understand it also being quite hurtful.

So I think that the excuse being 'it has lots of meanings' is pathetic. For the reason people started using the word 'Gay' in the place of stupid, is because of the second meaning, that being homosexual. So if that is your excuse, I suggest you just say stupid.

Oh I say it all the time. But to things that are actually gay, not unfortunate or stupid. Like that Eminem gag at the Movie Awards, or Sai's Bro. I don't mean it negatively. I use it to describe it's homosexuality. And it's very pointless to get upset, at least at me since I know for damn sure my intent is harmless. So go screw yourself. :)

I've never really understood how someone could call a D- report card homosexual. But what the hay!

Against or for saying it? Or neutral? Why?

Against.

this phrase describes anything weird or abnormal, so it represents an insult to a specific kind of people who consider themselves normal.

we're humans and we can control what we say , I was saying this phrase in High School but now I'm in college so I stopped saying it long time ago.

I think the "PSA" that inspired this thread is gay, especially the one starring Ms. Duff. Look it up. That thing's too gay for drag, banned even from pride parades.

Also, Duff is an annoying tit, so that particular PSA was made all the more useless.

Since saying something was gay means it was dumb colloquially speaking

What does it mean when you call something straight?

It means it's not crooked. :D

Really there's no reason for it to be a big deal, a word means something different depending on the context, whether someone chooses to get mad at it is their choice, but when you get mad at something said you need to think about the intent of it, was it meant to insult? Likely not when used in the context "That's so gay" the person really isn't even thinking about the meaning of the word, it's just a kind of saying nowadays, it should be perfectly fine to say it because the intent is usually innocent. Now there are ways to say stuff TO insult, but I don't think that's the point. And the people that think it's a big deal really shouldn't make it a big deal, cause by doing that you're not getting anything solved. If you don't wanna say it, don't say it, don't scold other people or get mad.

I find it interesting that you said nothing of the word "retarded" there.

I'm not sure how you meant it, but you used the word "retarded" synonymously with the word "stupid." Both were examples of how the word "gay" has "lost its meaning."

I think that the word "retarded" has also lost much of its meaning, in the sam way as you described. Is it really fair to use a word meaning "limited in mental development" to mean "stupid?"

Very interesting.

Retarded does not mean that. After all, what would "fire retardant" then mean?? Retardation has not lost nor changed its meaning--people are just grossly ignorant of its meaning. This makes its use in the argument "doubly moot".

It also makes this thread retarded.

Yes, most people really don't use it both words as the same way anymore. Anyway, I'm not saying I use the word 'retarded' as symonyns to 'stupid'. I'm using an example of what other people use it for. I don't say something is retarded, just like I don't say something is gay, so I care just as much.(Which means I don't care)
